name

edit

I think the name of article should be 2019 Iraqi protests or October 2019 Iraqi protests, because this new protests begun in October 2019 --FPP (talk) 13:52, 5 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

I also think the new article should be October 2019 Iraqi protests. These protests are different in many ways from previous protests, despite some similarities, especially in magnitude, the severity of the government response, and the evolving political and geopolitical context. Lawrencewa (talk) 00:46, 25 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

order

edit

I would reverse the order and discuss the 2019 protests first. Tedperl (talk) 17:34, 5 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

No need. I'd just write a passage about current protests in the lead. STSC (talk) 17:42, 5 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

New article

edit

Agreed. October 2019 protests are totally different than 2018, and started by the firing of Lt. Gen. Abdul-Wahab al-Saadi who led Iraqi special forces "golden division" counterterrorism operations which were highly successful in combating ISIS. This is notable because Saadi was very popular for improving Iraq's situation against corruption and outside influence from Iran, which was a major reason for the new 2019 protests. The reason for the protests, the causes, catalysts, and general thrust, as well as the types of events such as number of people killed, why, and the different stakeholder types all make this a totally October 2019 totally different from 2018, and should be new article. Sati010 (talk) 01:36, 22 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

October 2019 protests should be in a new article, because this protests isnt related to protests of 2018, and also Moqtada Sadar he is not leader of this protests. there is no leader to this protests until now --FPP (talk) 22:01, 6 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Agreed. The October protests are a completely new and separate movement. The infobox is also highly misleading as it suggests that the protesters are all part of these fringe groups rather than being a big tent movement. Lightspecs (talk) 23:48, 6 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
How does this title sound: October 2019 Iraqi protests? David O. Johnson (talk) 01:14, 7 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
Sounds good to me. Charles Essie (talk) 03:26, 8 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
@David O. Johnson: Sounds good to me too. comrade waddie96 ★ (talk) 13:47, 8 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
Should this article then remain named 2018–19 Iraqi protests, it may be conflicting with the October 2019 Iraqi protests name. I suggest moving leftover content to 2018 Iraqi protests. comrade waddie96 ★ (talk) 13:51, 8 October 2019 (UTC) (Please ping me)Reply
I agree completely. Charles Essie (talk) 16:12, 8 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

@FFP: Could you maybe clarify Moqtada Sadar's role in this? I suppose we can specify in infobox that he's a leader like this Moqtada Sadar (since XXX)? comrade waddie96 ★ (talk) 14:03, 10 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Waddie96: no Moqtada Sadar he isnt leader of this current protests, maybe some politicians would describe their support to this protests, but no one from this protesters announced that they are with Moqtada --FPP (talk) 14:51, 10 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

@STSC: No 2018 protests was only in southern provinces, the main issue was bad electricity in this provinces, this protests ended after two months. current protests begun from Baghdad and then spreaded to other provinces, the main issue is unemployment --FPP (talk) 21:30, 11 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

As the infobox indicates: poor basic services and unemployment, etc. are the causes of these protests. You can't single out just one reason for 2018 and 2019 protests. It's better to group them together. STSC (talk) 14:46, 12 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
Maybe we could keep this keep this page as an umbrella article while also creating separate articles for the 2018 and 2019 articles. This is what we've done for the Venezuelan protests. Charles Essie (talk) 15:34, 12 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

I think its worth mentioning that the 2015-6 protest had similar causes too, but correctly merit a separate article because of important differences including in their genesis. Iraqis and Iraq watchers are not going to talk about the "protests of 2015-19"; they are going to talk about each protest movement/moment/logic on its own terms. Waves of protest, especially after elections created some new context, should be separated out. Lawrencewa (talk) 00:50, 25 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hello I create a new article now about October 2019 Iraqi protests because this protests now for changing the government and regime, this protests begun from Baghdad then spreaded to southern provinces --FPP (talk) 20:36, 26 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Map

edit

Is there any way I can use {{Location map+}} to create a map for this article showing the 4 places the protests are occuring? (viz. Baghdad, Amara, Nasiriya, and Basra.) Unfortunately, when I try use it in |map_type= it doesn't allow the aforementioned template i.e. one can only display a single label and pog. comrade waddie96 ★ (talk) 13:46, 8 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

2018–19 Iraqi protests2018 Iraqi protests – conflicting with October 2019 Iraqi protests article's title. Shorouq★The★Super★ninja2 (talk) 13:23, 28 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

 • Support. The two renaming issues intersect - but if 2019 Iraq protests became October 2019 Iraqi protests, then it would definitely have to be renamed October–November 2019 Iraqi protests, and unless the protests suddenly stop on Sunday in response to Mahdi's promised resignation offer, it would again have to be renamed to October–December 2019 Iraqi protests. So 2018 Iraqi protests for this article, and keeping 2019 Iraqi protests for the other article seems reasonable to me (in fact, the latter might have to become 2019–2020 Iraqi protests). Boud (talk) 22:28, 29 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
 • Support Well in the infobox date is already set as: 15 July 2018 — 7 September 2018. If somebody closes this request (I am afraid I cannot) and does the rename I could do the remaining cleanup of content. 83.11.94.170 (talk) 15:21, 1 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Aspect-specific sections and splits

edit

As in Template:2019 Hong Kong protests, if there is enough material in the sources (I think there is), and if there are enough active editors (probably not me), then starting to organise some of the aspects together (as per the sources and/or similar aspects to the HK case) in thematic subsections, rather than only as a chronology, might make sense. If/when the material is too much for individual protest articles, then it could be split, in a somewhat similar way to the HK articles. Assassination has been a security services tactic in Iraq since (at least) the post-2003 invasion period, by unidentified groups (possibly multiple groups), so it's a known, long-term phenomenon, for eliminating Iraqi academics and dissidents, with a lack of serious, independent investigations. Boud (talk) 22:42, 29 November 2019 (UTC) Obsolete for this article, I think. Boud (talk) 09:53, 8 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Merge proposal

edit

I suggest merging this article with 2015-16 Iraqi protests as both protests started over poor economic conditions, corruption and lack of water and electricity and both started in Baghdad. Shorouq★The★Super★ninja2 (talk) 07:15, 7 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
