Talk:2018 Équateur province Ebola outbreak/Archive 1
sitrep
editarticle per MEDMOS, will place situation reports here as they come in from WHO(update List of Ebola outbreaks accordingly)--Ozzie10aaaa (talk) 04:33, 9 May 2018 (UTC)
- interesting[1]

- ok, I'll follow and fix up the wording/sentence structure as necessary, fact check. JuanTamad (talk) 02:37, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
- you don't need to post the sitreps here I think. A citation in the article is sufficient. JuanTamad (talk) 07:18, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
- sounds good--Ozzie10aaaa (talk) 10:30, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you all for the sit rep and all the work. Geraldshields11 (talk) 17:03, 14 May 2018 (UTC)

- new report?[2]--Ozzie10aaaa (talk) 11:17, 22 May 2018 (UTC)
- I've been looking for the new report but with no success. The only place with new official figures is the WHO Ebola index page, but it's not a stable source to cite. The DRC health ministry doesn't seem to have current press releases. The minister seems to have given a press conference at the vaccination inaugural jamboree yesterday, which might have been the press source? Espresso Addict (talk) 21:16, 22 May 2018 (UTC)
- I guess officially we have to wait for sitrep 4...--Ozzie10aaaa (talk) 21:38, 22 May 2018 (UTC)
Subsection?
editInfection alert after dying Ebola patients taken to Congo prayer meetingpotentially infecting 50 people(in a city of 1 million)...might need its own subsection(under epidemiology) in the coming days[3]...IMO--Ozzie10aaaa (talk) 17:30, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
This outbreak will be the first real test of suppressing an Ebola outbreak with ring vaccination since the first, highly experimental use of the vaccine in the Ebola virus epidemic in West Africa. This angle is probably worth in-depth reporting, if we can find suitable sources. -- The Anome (talk) 09:23, 16 May 2018 (UTC)
- the problem w/ vaccination in general is that the virus(according to references) had a 5 month head-start before being detected(readded the image per edit reason)--Ozzie10aaaa (talk) 11:06, 16 May 2018 (UTC)
- here's another about the success of early efforts, but it's not over yet. STAT and this author have done good reporting on outbreaks in the past. JuanTamad (talk) 04:06, 17 May 2018 (UTC)
- Will the 4,000 vaccines cover ring vaccination in a city of 1.1 million or will they go to the original outbreak location? I can not find a RS. Geraldshields11 (talk) 13:49, 17 May 2018 (UTC)
- According to WHO offical Peter Salama priority to people in Mbandaka who had been in contact with those suspected of carrying the Ebola virus before people in any other affected area . Rump1234 (talk) 13:49, 17 May 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks @Rump1234: Also, I found the BBC source independently just a moment ago and checked back here. Geraldshields11 (talk) 15:29, 17 May 2018 (UTC)

Consolidation
editI've hacked the article around a bit to make it less of a timeline and more a consolidated account. I'd suggest just adding new situation report figures to the table and trying to avoid adding numerical updates from other sources. If these are added in between the official updates, they should probably be removed when WHO official reports catch up. I've removed all the contact numbers; these could potentially be added to the table but were just cluttering up the text. Hopefully I haven't deleted anything too important. Espresso Addict (talk) 06:22, 19 May 2018 (UTC)
- @Espresso Addict: Thank you! This has greatly improved the article, which was starting to become a wall of unconsolidated text. -- The Anome (talk) 09:59, 19 May 2018 (UTC)
- agree--Ozzie10aaaa (talk) 10:32, 19 May 2018 (UTC)
Regional map
editI've removed the regional map again. At the moment, all the cases are restricted to one single province, and there's no need to put a multi-region map into the article in mere anticipation that it will be needed in the future. With any luck, the outbreak will continue to be contained within a single region and we won't need to put the map back back. -- The Anome (talk) 10:04, 19 May 2018 (UTC)
- ok, however should the outbreak progress(even more) it should be placed back...IMO--Ozzie10aaaa (talk) 10:34, 19 May 2018 (UTC)
The map below shows the regions of the DRC. Names of regions affected are in bold type.
1. Kinshasa | 14. Ituri Province
2. Kongo Central | 15. Haut-Uele
3. Kwango | 16. Tshopo | |
4. Kwilu Province | 17. Bas-Uele
5. Mai-Ndombe Province | 18. Nord-Ubangi
6. Kasaï Province | 19. Mongala
7. Kasaï-Central | 20. Sud-Ubangi
8. Kasaï-Oriental | 21. Équateur
9. Lomami Province | 22. Tshuapa
10. Sankuru | 23. Tanganyika Province
11. Maniema | 24. Haut-Lomami
12. South Kivu | 25. Lualaba Province
13. North Kivu | 26. Haut-Katanga Province |
- @Ozzie10aaaa: Absolutely. If the situation warrants it, we can even make and maintain a custom map, as has been done with other outbreaks. -- The Anome (talk) 10:39, 20 May 2018 (UTC)
- thanks(hopefully the situation on the ground in DRC improves)--Ozzie10aaaa (talk) 10:43, 20 May 2018 (UTC)
Map in infobox
editIs it possible to have a map of Africa in the infobox to show where the country is? Christian75 (talk) 10:16, 19 May 2018 (UTC)
- will look into it--Ozzie10aaaa (talk) 10:36, 19 May 2018 (UTC)
- I've added one. -- The Anome (talk) 10:45, 20 May 2018 (UTC)
Maps
editI just thought I'd add a link to Reliefweb's maps page for this epidemic:
https://reliefweb.int/disaster/ep-2018-000049-cod/thumb#content_top
And here's are two articles about the extreme difficulty of generating maps in this current situation, due to confusion and lack of geographical data:

- I had briefly mentioned this under Response/Surveillance and prevention of transmission, referencing The Atlantic article. Espresso Addict (talk) 23:20, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
ProMED mail
editProMED-mail is another good way to stay up on developments. The commentary at the end by the moderators is also interesting. Most recent: EBOLA UPDATE (15): CASE UPDATE, QUARANTINE BREACHES, BORDER CONTROLS, VACCINEJuanTamad (talk) 01:58, 25 May 2018 (UTC)
- it is a respected source, and have used it --Ozzie10aaaa (talk) 10:21, 25 May 2018 (UTC)
Cause for optimism?/coming to an end
editadditional content/discussion

Right now, it looks like there are grounds for cautious optimism, with no new cases for some time, and contact trcking numbers slowly winding down. There's a perhaps over-optimistic Voice of America article here: https://projects.voanews.com/drc-ebola-outbreak/ that looks at reasons why this particular outbreak may have been different from previous ones. -- The Anome (talk) 12:12, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
DisambiguationeditThis article has now been moved from 2018 Democratic Republic of the Congo Ebola virus outbreak to 2018 Équateur province Democratic Republic of the Congo Ebola virus outbreak. This is clearly over-long, but necessary in the short term to disambiguate it from the new Kivu outbreak. What would be a better title for this? Perhaps 2018 Équateur province DRC Ebola virus outbreak? Or just 2018 Équateur province Ebola virus outbreak? -- The Anome (talk) 12:40, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
