- WP:NOTNEWS. Let's not fetishize every aspect of American politics. Drmies (talk) 18:25, 8 January 2019 (UTC)
- There was a lot of noise about this speech, but if editors believe a standalone article is not warranted, perhaps some content could be merged/move over to Timeline of the Donald Trump presidency (2019 Q1). Either way, I think it'd be nice to let the dust settle to see if this article is expanded over the next few days. ---Another Believer (Talk) 02:31, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
- It might be notable because it was his first speech on TV directly to the American people. I don't know how many of this type of speech other presidents have made, but I'd guess it's been something like 2-3 every four years. Perhaps it might be combined into 1 big article Oval Office speeches by U.S. Presidents. The aspect that intrigued me was the bit with Pence and others suggesting that Trump would declare a national emergency. Didn't happen though. Smallbones(smalltalk) 03:34, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
- It was highly anticipated. A president's first Oval Office address is a big deal. In the middle of a Government shutdown that may be the longest. Trump's 2020 MAGA reelection campaign sent fundraising emails for an 'Official Secure the Border Fund' in advance of and after the speech. ―Buster7 ☎ 20:38, 9 January 2019 (UTC)

Note: There was a lot of speculation Trump would declare a national emergency, which he did not, seemingly to the surprise of many media outlets/reporters/commentators... There is also an emphasis on fact-checking and accusations of making misleading statements. ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:01, 9 January 2019 (UTC)

"Timing" section
editThanks for adding. Should this section also mention the invitation Trump extended to Democratic leaders to discuss wall funding, which took place the following day (today)? ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:42, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
- One thing leads to another. The speech led to the invite ("We can get it done in 45 minutes!") which led to today's mtg which led to Trumps walk-out. Maybe its two separate articles? ―Buster7 ☎ 22:08, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
- I doubt there should be an article about the meeting/walk-out. But, might be worth mentioning Trump extended an opportunity to meet during the speech, with a follow-up sentence about how the meeting went today. ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:12, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
Article title
editAn editor moved the page from January 2019 Donald Trump speech to 2019 Oval Office address. What do editors think? ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:48, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
- Update: The article has been moved to January 2019 Oval Office address. ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:51, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Another Believer: I'm not sure what the best title would be right now, but I think that the title should be disambiguated from the 2019 State of the Union Address article. Additionally, Trump has given 16 other Oval Office addresses, so the current title may not be the best one. MarkZusab (talk) 21:56, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
- Yes, I agree, "2019 Oval Office address" is not particularly helpful. I'm fine with "January 2019" to start the title, but I'm on the fence w/r/t "Donald Trump speech" vs. "Oval Office address". ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:58, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
- I think that "January 2019 Donald Trump speech" is not the best title because he is scheduled to give another major speech in January 2019, the 2019 State of the Union Address. MarkZusab (talk) 22:01, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
- That makes sense. Thanks! ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:03, 9 January 2019 (UTC)

Viewership
editI found a source about viewership, but wondering if there are other sources/stats out there as well:
---Another Believer (Talk) 22:07, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
- I just heard NPR-Radio say it was over 20 million.―Buster7 ☎ 01:57, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
Fundraising emails
editReports are that the Trump campaign solicited donations to a "Official Secure the Border Fund" before and after the speech but that the contributions were actually for the 2020 MAGA campaign. What about that? ―Buster7 ☎ 22:14, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
- I don't have a problem with having a sentence noting the solicitations before and after the speech, if the claims are supported by secondary coverage. ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:15, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
- If it bubbles up beyond MSNBC's Larry ODonnell, I'll add mention of it. ―Buster7 ☎ 22:20, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
- We can use sources other than O'Donnell:

- Thanks for collecting them. As I breeze thru them most tell a partial story or a pre-speech mention of the fundraising. There is a George Conway tweet that may garner more press. No rush! ―Buster7 ☎ 22:54, 9 January 2019 (UTC)

I suggest the following:
- A Trump Pence campaign fundraising email titled “Official Secure the Border Fund” was distributed prior to the speech and asked supporters to donate.
―Buster7 ☎ 17:04, 10 January 2019 (UTC)“We need to raise $500,000 in ONE DAY. I want to know who stood with me when it mattered most so I’ve asked my team to send me a list of EVERY AMERICAN PATRIOT who donates to the Official Secure the Border Fund,” stated the Trump-signed memo. “Please make a special contribution of $5 by 9 PM EST to our Official Secure the Border Fund to have your name sent to me after my speech.”
