Non-championship

We didn't add the non-championship Supercars/ATCC rounds (e.g. Grand Prix, Indy) to those championship pages so I'm yet to be convinced the AGP and Bathurst endurance events belong on this page.SchueyFan (talk) 09:15, 7 December 2019 (UTC)

@SchueyFan: if I remember rightly, those races were addressed in a "parent article" such as "19/20XX in V8 Supercars", which were meant to address all Supercars racing during a calendar year that was not part of the actual championship. To be honest, it was always an awkward system since there was little effort to link the championship article to the parent article in the first place. I always suspected that the only people who knew about the parent article were those who edited it, since it wasn't natural for the reader to assume that an article outside the championship article would exist at all.

It might make more sense to link the non-championship AGP race to 2020 Australian Grand Prix, but I doubt the editors at WP:F1 would like it since they're not even keen on Formula 2 and Formula 3 articles being linked to race reports. Mclarenfan17 (talk) 02:45, 27 December 2019 (UTC)

@Mclarenfan17: I think we should also consider removing from the entry list entries that have only confirmed participation in the TCR Asia Pacific Cup since this race is a non-championship event and the results do not count for the overall standings. So far René Münnich, Jack Milligan and Stan van Oord have only confirmed participation in the Melbourne race and not in the championship proper. For this, I propose moving those entries to the TCR Asia Pacific Cup article once it's created.Ivaneurope (talk) 08:27, 9 February 2020 (UTC)

@Ivaneurope: I think it's going to come down to how we define "series". WP:MOTOR already makes a distinction between "championship" and "season", so defining "series" makes sense. In this case, it's a series of races in Australia that are run to TCR regulations. That includes both championship and non-championship races.

I've divided the table into two parts: championship and non-championship entries. Some series often include guest drivers who are not eligible to score points, so this is an extension of that. Mclarenfan17 (talk) 07:30, 11 February 2020 (UTC)

Team and driver changes vs. In detail

There is a debate on what the section below the entry list must describe. Previously that section was called In detail, but instead I think the usage of Team and driver changes is more appropriate because such section mostly descrtibe teams and drivers entering or leaving said series. Example - 2019 World Touring Car Cup.

@Ivaneurope: articles should do more than just detail changes. It's a bad habit that WT:MOTOR articles do. Say, for example, that Sebastian Vettel is off-contract and has offers to stay with Ferrari, go to Mercedes, or the option to leave the sport. Why are only two of those—moving to Mercedes and retiring—notable enough to be included in the article? Every team and driver who competes should be detailed, not just the ones who make a change for 2020. If we only focus on what has changed for 2020, we have only written half an article and the reader has to go through the 2019 article to understand what is different and what remains the same in 2020. @Mclarenfan17: Contract extensions and offers are usually left out of season articles. Only changes to teams, drivers and race events to my knowledge are highlighted – nowhere is highlighted that "Driver X stays in Team A". You can look in other articles such as 2019 British Touring Car Championship or 2020 Supercars Championship.

But more should be addressed. Focusing solely on changes is a habit left over from the early days of Wikipedia, when lots of articles had to be created.

And I have never accepted "it's always been done that way" as an argument to keep doing something because it assumes the current way of doing something is always going to be the best way of doing it, dismissing new ideas before they can even be considered. I think that Mclarenfan17's proposal will work. Even if the driver remained in the same team, it is the relevant information to the season. It will improve articles, i.e. "Valtteri Bottas was retained by Mercedes with the new one-year deal". I think that we should use Macau Grand Prix entry list section as a perfect example how to write about competitors. Corvus tristis (talk) 05:38, 29 December 2019 (UTC)
