2022 al-Shabaab invasion of Ethiopia2022 al-Shabaab offensive in Ethiopia – Al-Shabaab is not a country, but a militant group, so you can't really call it an "invasion", but rather an "offensive". UkraineFella (talk) 12:01, 8 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Oppose - per WP:COMMONNAME, we should use the terms most commonly used by reliable sources. Sources generally called this an "invasion". Applodion (talk) 12:33, 8 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose - Per above post by Applodion. Multiple reliable sources call this an invasion, and while al-Shabaab is not a country, as far as I'm aware, being a country is not necessarily a requirement for conducting an invasion. XTheBedrockX (talk) 20:11, 8 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Al-Shabbat militants should not be referred to as “rebels.”

edit

Yes, they are technically rebels considering how they are a non-state entity fighting to overthrow the government of both Somalia and Ethiopia, but “rebel” generally has a positive and/or neutral connotation, and given the atrocities committed by Al-Shabaab, I think the word “militant” (maybe even “terrorist”) is a more appropriate word to use. "Rebel" is a neutral word, and al-Shabaab is a rebel group. In contrast, "terrorist" is not a neutral word. Applodion (talk) 22:34, 12 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
They’re still generally considered a terrorist group (they even have ties to Al-Qaeda), and the word “rebel” doesn’t accurately describe what this truly group is. Even if they aren’t referred to as “terrorists,” they should at least be referred to as “militants.” LordOfWalruses (talk) 03:52, 13 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Regarding update

edit

@Whoopsawa: I just wanted to respond to your recent change, and thank you. Why? Well, as I began gathering old sources which talked about how the invading forces had been largely eliminated, I thought: "Perhaps I should look for new sources as well". And, well, I found this new(ish) source which actually outlines that the incursion might have been far more successful than reported by any source. I will adjust the article accordingly; thanks for pushing me toward finding this gem! Applodion (talk) 17:08, 12 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Applodion Glad to help. I have no issue with the infobox saying the attack was largely repulsed or something, but I think it’s a stretch to accept claims of the AS force being ‘mostly destroyed’ as an objective fact from ENDF generals or Somali Region officials who also claim the Oromo Liberation Front had a hidden hand in this.
