Brackets in years

edit

Hey all! I hope you are having a wonderful Sunday. I brought this up last year but only one other editor commented, so I am going to bring it up again.

In the "Continuing television programmes" section (of all "Year in British Television" pages), all of the year durations are in brackets. However, there seems to be no reason for this, as they are in a separate table and them being in brackets does not seem to make any sense, especially as there is no text alongside them. I think that the brackets should be removed as I do not see any reason for them – it's also a bit confusing and a waste of characters. For other tables where durations are used, they are never in brackets, and nothing in the MOS dictates that it should be un brackets. Hence, I suggest that we remove the brackets as there seems to be no reason, and it is grammatically incorrect. DaniloDaysOfOurLives (talk) 22:34, 9 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

  • Support removal of brackets I've edited these yearly lists for a few years running and had the same thought many, many times, but never really thought to remove them as it wasn't at the front of my mind. But if you're willing to, I would support the removal as they are, as you clarified, incorrectly used. – Meena23:02, 9 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Just an additional comment: 2023 in British radio uses brackets for years e.g. "The Archer (1950–Present)" and even articles such as 1971 in British television – however they are not in table form and thus it makes sense, whereas the programmes here are in a table and thus makes the brackets redundant and factually incorrect. Since there is no currently no objection (and I doubt that there will be more participation), I have removed the brackets from this page for now. If there is a change in consensus to add them back then we can of course do that. I will wait a few more days and if there is no objection I will remove the brackets from other pages. This article has 294,071 bytes of markup. How can it be reduced? Should it be dived into three of four sub-articles? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 22:13, 9 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
