2024 Taiwan earthquake → 2024 Hualien earthquake. For consistency with other Taiwan earthquake articles such as the 2018 Hualien earthquake. As far as the template box is concerned, this is the only earthquake in Taiwan that uses Taiwan. Borgenland (talk) 14:01, 3 April 2024 (UTC)

- Support: I think the article stands out on the category of taiwanese earthquakes, most of the articles in the category specify where the earthquake happened. Also, as KyuuA4 said, there is a essay about accuracy. DANGA14talk 00:56, 4 April 2024 (UTC)
- Support per nom. Also note that Google seems to use "Hualien City earthquake." — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rusty4321 (talk • contribs) 01:24, 4 April 2024 (UTC)
- Support: It makes sense to specify the area, especially since it seems that Taiwan is very seismically active and the other articles of earthquakes also use an area rather than country. Pacamah (talk) 01:57, 4 April 2024 (UTC)
- Appears that consensus has been reached. Do I have the right to move it now or should a third-party user do it? Apologies it's the first time I made a proposal like this. Borgenland (talk) 02:24, 4 April 2024 (UTC)
Tampering of refs
User:Nkywvuong has been POV-pushing their nomenclature for Taiwan in violation of Common Name protocols and is even unscrupulous enough to tamper with a USGS reference title just to fit their agenda (see [[1]]) and rudely make an edit summary in a language that not everyone can understand (see [[2]]). Borgenland (talk) 09:42, 3 April 2024 (UTC)
- I understand your concern and appreciate the citation. Do you have a suggestion on how to fix this so it can be properly addressed? Jurisdicta (talk) 04:21, 4 April 2024 (UTC)
- I personally would have wanted sanctions but then again we are all bound to assume good faith unless necessary. Then again, looking at the user's talk page, it appears that they had been warned previously about similar edits but have never responded to it. Borgenland (talk) 04:27, 4 April 2024 (UTC)
Tsunami height map
Considering the rather small tsunami heights, the map seems excessive to me. Mikenorton (talk) 11:35, 4 April 2024 (UTC)
PRC Tsunami
There are two warnings from the PRC in the tsunami section with contradictory alert levels on opposite ends of the section. Which one is factually correct? Borgenland (talk) 15:24, 5 April 2024 (UTC)

To be less vague can this sentence:
- A high school building in the city also sustained heavy damage.
be changed into
- The National Hualien Girls' Senior High School in the city also sustained heavy damage.
(see the damage of this high school for instance at Commons:Category:Hualien Girls' Senior High School during 2024 April Earthquake)

Some intensity data are wrong (Hualien City was 6-, not 6+). Can you please correct them and quote the CWA website directly? Reference:[[3]] — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.2.135.144 (talk) 21:55, 6 April 2024 (UTC)
Advanced warning info incorrect
The article says "Taiwan's earthquake alert system did not send an advance alert of the mainshock, unlike in previous instances" - this is incorrect. I was in Taipei at the time and I received a broadcast alert on my phone some 10-12 seconds before the tremor started in Taipei. It was issued by the Presidential Office and advised of an incoming earthquake, asking to remain calm and seek cover. I'm sure this can be verified somewhere. 2A02:8084:D04:7880:E48E:9F50:91E9:5B28 (talk) 15:51, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
- https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/apr/07/as-well-prepared-as-they-could-be-how-taiwan-kept-death-toll-low-in-massive-earthquake - this has a paragraph about the warnings - it seems areas with lower intensity didn't get the notification, higher intensity areas (like Taipei) did:
- "The nationwide mobile alerts also give people what experts say are precious seconds to find cover before debris starts to tumble. CCTV footage from a maternity centre in Taipei, the capital, which also felt some shocks, showed nurses racing to stabilise wobbling cots to protect the newborns.
- In another video, the earthquake warning system can be seen interrupting a live television broadcast more than 10 seconds before the studio starts to shake (although the presenter continues to report).
- Still, people in some counties that experienced smaller quakes complained that they did not receive phone alerts. Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration said they were only sent to people in areas which registered an intensity of 4 or above , although the agency is reportedly working on developing an artificial intelligence system to provide more targeted warnings in future.
- Pascale noted that setting notification thresholds was a difficult balance. “It often takes an event like this to highlight the difference between a calculated threshold and what the community expects to hear about,” he said, adding that the danger of making alert systems too sensitive is that “people ignore or disable notifications altogether”. 2A02:8084:D04:7880:E48E:9F50:91E9:5B28 (talk) 16:03, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
Missing and Trapped
Should a distinction be made between those trapped/stranded and those simply missing in the infobox? Borgenland (talk) 16:43, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
- I am not sure how one would differentiate those trapped and stranded versus those who are simply missing. While a few may be able to be identified by communicating that they are trapped, I imagine that the majority who may be trapped or stranded are unknown and would fit under "missing". Is there other poinst that should be considered? Jurisdicta (talk) 04:57, 9 April 2024 (UTC)
Largest?
In the lede we have:
It is the largest earthquake in Taiwan since the 1999 Jiji earthquake,
Does this mean strongest? Covering the greatest area? Most fatal? Most costly? Something else? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:08, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
- I think it was meant to be the strongest magnitude if you look at the Taiwan earthquakes template. Borgenland (talk) 14:19, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
[restored from archive]
Can anyone confirm, and source? Or should this be removed? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:07, 9 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Pigsonthewing I think this means strongest, see List of earthquakes in Taiwan#Earthquakes as according to the list this was the highest-magnitude quake since '99. I fixed it. 🇺🇲JayCubby✡ please edit my user page! Talk 21:21, 9 April 2024 (UTC)

Aftershocks
Any reliable source to update total number of aftershocks? The last tally is from April 7. Borgenland (talk) 19:08, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
Fatalities
The April 3 section mentions 4 people killed in Taroko National Park, including 3 hikers who were killed in a rockfall. However, later in the same paragraph it mentions 5 members of the same family who were killed by a rockfall in the same park. Are these the same people, or different people? Please verify and combine any duplicates in order to avoid duplication. It would be worth mentioning how many people in total died in the National Park. Is it 5, or 9? 142.117.133.114 (talk) 07:48, 23 April 2024 (UTC)
- The 5 extra deaths were recorded in the park later. The section has to be carefully reworded though to avoid wrecking the paragraphs. Borgenland (talk) 08:02, 23 April 2024 (UTC)
