Syria
editThere were simultaneous attacks in Syria in response to the Kerman bombing a few days ago. Should the title be changed to reflect this? Sakiv (talk) 23:18, 15 January 2024 (UTC)

The result of the move request was: Moved to 2024 Iranian missile strikes in Iraq and Syria. Strong consensus in favour of changing the name but there were a range of different proposals which made identifying the name-variant that received consensus hard, however this appears to be the variant that was favoured by the most people.
@TheDoodbly: - unfortunately there is a massive backlog of RM discussions that need closing at the moment. (non-admin closure) FOARP (talk) 15:01, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
2024 Erbil attack → ? – It appears that they were coordinated attacks on targets in Syria and Iraq aimed at responding to the Kerman bombing and killing resistance leaders, as stated in the Iranian statement. Sakiv (talk) 00:28, 16 January 2024 (UTC)
- Agreed - The attacks took place in Erbil as well as in the Idlib governorate in Syria. RamHez (talk) 01:06, 16 January 2024 (UTC)
- If reliable sources refer to attacks in different locations and not simply Erbil than indeed best change the title. What titles do you propose? Homerethegreat (talk) 14:57, 16 January 2024 (UTC)
- (Reuters), (CNN). Something like Iranian attacks on Iraq and Syria (January 2024). Sakiv (talk) 14:59, 16 January 2024 (UTC)
- Iran has also now launched a wave of attacks on terrorist groups based in Balochistan, Pakistan. (Reuters) RamHez (talk) 18:09, 16 January 2024 (UTC)
- (Reuters), (CNN). Something like Iranian attacks on Iraq and Syria (January 2024). Sakiv (talk) 14:59, 16 January 2024 (UTC)
- Support - 2024 Iranian strikes in Iraq and Syria is a more fitting title in my opinion Durranistan (talk) 17:35, 19 January 2024 (UTC)
Agree move to include Syria. 2024 Iranian ballistic missile attacks in Iraq and Syria is suitable. It's important to make a distinction by using ballistic missiles as attacks alone could be misinterpreted as being part of Attacks on U.S. bases in Iraq and Syria (2023–present). Ecrusized (talk) 21:25, 16 January 2024 (UTC)
- I believe 2024 Iranian airstrikes in Iraq and Syria would be a more fitting title since Iran did not just launch ballistic missiles but suicide drones as well. And it makes for a shorter title. RamHez (talk) 02:05, 17 January 2024 (UTC)
- Airstrikes are offensive operations carried out by aircraft...delivered from aircraft such as blimps, balloons, fighter aircraft, attack aircraft, bombers, attack helicopters, and drones. Ballistic missiles do not fit this criteria. Would also support 2024 Iranian missile strikes in Iraq and Syria. Ecrusized (talk) 10:40, 17 January 2024 (UTC)
- Shorter is better, but doesn't this generate assumptions that there will be a series of paired attacks by Iran on Iraq & Syria throughout 2024? What about 2024 Erbil/Idlib attacks? Is there a known Iranian operation name (e.g. Operation Erbil/Idlib, Operation Kerman Revenge...)? 02:52, 17 January 2024 (UTC)
- Support: These attacks were carried out just prior to the 2024 Iranian missile strikes in Pakistan, and did not just target Iraqi Kurdistan. I think something along the lines of "2024 Iranian missile strikes in Iraq and Syria" would be more appropriate. TheDoodbly (talk) 21:35, 17 January 2024 (UTC)
- Support: The name "2024 Iranian missile strikes in Iraq and Syria" is appropriate. RamHez (talk) 02:53, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
It should be split into two articles:
- 2024 Iranian missile strikes in Iraq
- 2024 Iranian missile strikes in Syria
- 2024 Iranian missile strikes in Pakistan
These are three different attacks.--Htmlzycq (talk) 12:21, 18 January 2024 (UTC)
- The missile attack in Iraq and Syria was launched concurrently. The attack in Pakistan came a day later. There is also little to no information regarding the missile strike in Syria, so it doesn't warrant a separate article. WP:NOTNEWS. Ecrusized (talk) 10:03, 19 January 2024 (UTC)
- Although the two missile attacks occurred on the same day, they have three differences: different targets (ISIS personnel or Kurdish businessmen), different missiles used (long-range missiles over 1000 kilometers or short-range missiles within 100 kilometers), and different countries.
- Why put two different events in one article? Htmlzycq (talk) 10:07, 20 January 2024 (UTC)
- Is there any reason why this is taking so long? There's been no further activity on this move discussion since 20/21 January, and it seems like almost every respondent is in favour of renaming the article. Maybe it's time to apply WP:BOLD? TheDoodbly (talk) 02:49, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
