Orders of battle - Anglicisation
editAs an english article, I feel that too much german is used in this and similar articles - I presume this was orig. a matter of expediency, poss. coupled with uncertainty as to how best to anglicise.
At present, the 1918 orbat is:
- 54. Landwehr-Brigade
- Württembergisches Landwehr-Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 120
- Württembergisches Landwehr-Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 122
- Württembergisches Landwehr-Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 125
- 4.Eskadron/Ulanen-Regiment König Wilhelm I (2. Württembergisches) Nr. 20
- Artillerie-Kommandeur 148:
- Landwehr-Feldartillerie-Regiment Nr. 2
- Stab Pionier-Bataillon Nr. 402:
- 1.Landwehr-Kompanie/Württembergisches Pionier-Bataillon Nr. 13
- 5.Landwehr-Kompanie/Württembergisches Pionier-Bataillon Nr. 13
- Minenwerfer-Kompanie Nr. 302
- Divisions-Nachrichten-Kommandeur 502
I realise that: i) there is generally more than one way of anglicising; ii) word-for-word translations are not always the most apt choice ('minenwerfer' = mine thrower/launcher, but mortar is much more sensible); and iii) it is not always advisable to translate everything (e.g. 'Landwehr' has no obvious english equivalent, so simpler to continue using it; and titles shouldn't be translated). I propose:
- 54 Landwehr Brigade -- 54th LW Bde is an obvious alternative
- Württemberg 120th Landwehr Infantry Regiment -- LIR No. 120 is an obvious alternative, but seems "less english" to me
- 4th Sqn, 20th "König Wilhelm I (2. Württembergisches)" Lancer Regiment -- Why do people use 'Uhlan' as a translation when we have the perfectly serviceable word 'Lancer' - its not like 'Kürassier', where english lacks an appropriate term and 'translates' using the more commonly known french word, 'Cuirassier'
- 148th Artillery Command: -- I know it translates as 'Commander'
- 2nd Landwehr Field Artillery Regiment
- 402nd Pioneer Battalion HQ: -- 'Stab' = 'Staff', but HQ feels "more english"
- 1st Landwehr Co., 13th (Württemberg) Pioneer Battalion
- 302nd Mortar Company
- 502nd Divisional Signals Command
I aim to start amending in the summer, thus allowing time for the wiki community to: i) agree on whether the articles should be anglicised; and if so ii) reach a consensus on the method that should be used.Glevum (talk) 17:50, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
