Adult games

I was thinking it would be informative, and also humorously entertaining, if we added a mention about the rash of adult games released on the system towards the end of the system's life. Does anybody else recall those? I never actually played any of them myself (no really, I haven't) but from what I've seen online, they appear to be less game and more just video CDs or slideshows of some kind. It was almost like a final attempt to sell systems towards the end, almost like a "let's go out blazing" marketing decision. Anyway I thought it would be a worthy mention since no other console really tried something so desperate. Zombie007 (talk) 20:44, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

Haha yes they did release some truly terrible adult games like Plumber Don't Wear Ties. Someone good at writing should add it. Jaguar2600 —Preceding comment was added at 01:57, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

3do stands for Three Dimensional Operable M8gen 10:31, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

It never had a specifically defined meaning. Trip would spin the meaning all different ways, but I never heard him give a definite answer. Inside 3DO the accepted meaning was "whatever Trip wants it to mean during a particular pitch". Wabobo3 (talk) 22:29, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

I want to add that read once in Diehard Gamefan magazine that it also stands for three dollars (and the O is a disc) as the royalty to the 3DO company was $3 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.86.130.201 (talk) 19:20, 23 August 2008 (UTC)

I think the first reply here is correct. I remember interviewing Trip Hawkins about eight or nine years ago, when he was promoting yet another Army Men piece of crap, and he said something about the name signifying the third form of home entertainment. First you had audio, then you had video, and third you had threedeeo. It's a forerunner of the old Playstation 2 marketing slogan, 'the third place'. They were ahead of their time! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.113.198.67 (talk) 11:50, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

The PS3 of it's time?

Do you consider this to be the PS3 of it's time? 24.128.186.205 01:47, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

Absolutely! Read this quote from the article: "For a significant period of the product's life cycle, 3DO's official stance on pricing was that the 3DO was not a video game console, it was a high-end audio-visual system and was priced accordingly, so no price adjustment was needed." Same exact words as if they came out of PS3 exec's mouth. However, I dont think that Sony will fold the way 3DO did, but rather it will place itself into a position of Nintendo with GameCube. It wont be a total failure, but certainly will not be the leader. Sony's only chance will be the next generation of consoles, in some 2012. 76.237.132.203 02:16, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

LG 3do

I have seen a LG variation of the 3do. Although LG was goldstar it isn't the same as the goldstar version. Here's some pictures of it that I uploaded on imageshack LG 3do 01 LG 3do 02 LG 3do 03 LG 3do 04 --Kjarl Dreadnought 03:35, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

Where did you find these images? You could upload the first one and put it on the main page with a brief description of the model if you like. --Thaddius 17:43, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
I just looked at the main page and the list of models and is mentions "Goldstar 3DO ALIVE II (South Korea only)" which would seem to be the model you have pics of. --Thaddius 17:45, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

I just noticed that on the second pic the 3do is dated November 1996, this brings up a few questions as the 3do was discontinued in 1995 and the console that was to succeed the 3do, the panasonic M2 was canceled in 1996.--86.140.58.40 15:13, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

I think it means that a certain model was discontinued in 95. But by all means do some resech and find out the truth. --Thaddius 17:57, 16 September 2006 (UTC)
For what it's worth, 3DO Corporate was still sending out review materials to the magazine I worked with into 2006. They even sent out reviewables of Snow Job in 2006 if I'm not mystaken (I might be able to find the correspondence that came with my copy to get an exact date). emulation needs to be covered in this article -red-x Freedo is one emulator

The links section of this contains a link to a CD-i site. There's no reason for that on a 3DO article, so I'm going to remove it. Urquankohrah 00:21, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

This page needs a screen shot of what the 3DO games looked like. I don't have a clue what the 3DO games looked like, were they untextured like the virtua fighter games, did they look more like SNES games? I don't have a clue and this page wont show me JayKeaton 03:47, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Are you talking about visual quality? From that regard, quality was almost on par with some earlier playstation games, though not quite as refined as the best games released for that console. Sound quality was on par with the Sega CD. It wasn't a bad system at all -- I got one when it first came out and I loved it. It was just horrendously over-priced. 68.189.255.6

I can take a picture of a game or two. Should it go here or on the games page? I have never uploaded a picture on wikipedia before so I may need assistance. I am also unsure if it would break any copyright laws to do so. M8gen 10:07, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

The system wasn't close to being as powerful as the Playstation or Saturn. I had one, and loved it, it had some brilliant games, but it wasn't that powerful. Only one 3D fighting game was ever released for it, Foes of Ali, and if you compare that to say, Tekken 3, Tekken 3 blows it out of the water. Since both games were released toward the end of the systems, I'd say they're a pretty good comparison. That said, I'm sure the 3DO could have been used more impressively than it was.. i.e. they could have done some less demanding 3D fighters like Virtua Fighter 1. Return Fire was 3D and that looked good on 3DO. In terms of 2D it was ok.. from what I remember the 3DO version of Street Fighter 2 looked better than the Playstation one. But yeah, the 3DO didn't fail because it was underpowered, it was overpriced and undersupported.. Doom jester 18:38, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

It was closer than you seem to indicate. No, it couldn't push as many polys (or as many textured polys), but it wasn't that far off. There were all of the same gen. Comparing Foes of Ali with any of the Tekken games is flawed because Foes of Ali, while a boxing game, isn't a fighter like Tekken. Also, although they were both released late in their consoles respective life cycles, 3DO was much harder to develop on than PSOne (easier than Saturn, N64, and especially Jaguar - the hardest of the bunch, though). At the end of the PSone life cycle devs were very used to developing on the console; by the time Foes of Ali came out on 3DO, devs were only just getting the hang of the console. That's a sizable difference.

I'd say a better comparison is Foes of Ali and, say, Knockout Kings. The latter is better looking, obviously, and is far smoother in motion. And they're the same type of game.

And "Sega CD" quality sound? Please! Sound quality was actually better than PSone and Saturn in many cases, and way better than Sega CD, and that was because Dolby Surround was supported for most of the games on 3DO. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Spiffyoneandonly (talkcontribs) 19:50, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

In the mentioning of competing consoles of the time, there is no mention of the Atari Jaguar. They were both released on almost the same day, were the first to jump past the 16 bitters and also died a similar death at the same time. There was a bit of a mini-war between then jag and 3do from 1993 to 95 when the Playstation cleaned house on almost everyone. Mention the side by side comparisons and contrastings these 2 systems had in 93!! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.86.130.201 (talk) 19:25, 23 August 2008 (UTC)

europe

was this ever released in europe? if so how much was it?

Yes I bought one myself, according to my "Games World Magazine" The 3DO was launched in the UK for £399 and had Total Eclipse packaged with it, by 1996 an issue of Gamesmaster I own quotes the price to have dropped to £199 and now being packaged with Starblade —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.157.218.216 (talk) 10:45, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

Six Million?

There's no way it really sold that much. Really? (Lord Omega Yagami 00:59, 23 April 2007 (UTC))

6 million isn't that much at all in the console market.

The Dreamcast wasn't too far off from that. And much unlike the Dreamcast, the 3DO was complete crap and way overpriced to boot. There's just no way it sold that much. (Lord Omega Yagami 22:45, 11 June 2007 (UTC))

The 3DO existed for about 3 years. Over that time, it's pretty poor for a console to sell only 6 million. Think of it like this. The PS3 has been out for about 6 months now. It has already sold 3 million at a price of $600. The Wii has sold even more than the 3DO did in its entire life in about 6 months. The Wii is edging on about 7 million units sold while the 360 is standing at about 11 million units sold. So when you do the math from past console sales, 6 million over the course of 3 years isn't good at all. You mentioned the Dreamcast as well. In the US, the dreamcast only stuck around for about 2 years with 10 million units sold. Once again, beating the 3DO.

Also, the 3DO was awesome. It was way underrated in my opinion. I've owned one since launch and I still play it. It basically screwed itself by wasting its great technology on FMV games and of course its huge price tag.

It was also sold world-wide, from what I remember. In fact, some of the emulator projects (as well as some of the fansites) are in Russian. Apparently it had a cult following there.

So, if it was released in such far ranging regions then it's not impossible for it to have sold 6 or so million units. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.44.71.8 (talk) 19:30, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

You think that's a crazy number? The original business plan for the multiplayer projected eventual sales of 2 or three billion players. I remember pointing out at a company meeting that that was greater than the number of TV sets on the planet, so were we expecting buyers to hook up more than one per tube? Trip didn't think that was funny. Wabobo3 (talk) 22:33, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

competition?

Would'dent Commodore's Amiga CD32 and Atari's Jaguar 64 be direct competition with the 3do to an greater exstnet then NEC's PC Engine, Sega's Mega Drive, Nintendo's Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega's Saturn, Sony's PlayStation and Nintendo's Nintendo 64 throughout the consoles life considering, they came out at the same time had the same level of overall power and the same lifetime sucsess, just a thought. mcjakeqcool Mcjakeqcool (talk) 11:19, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

Welllll... if you'll note the article says "primary market" and from that stand point it is accurate. I suppose if you really wanted to make the case for a secondary video game competition group you could lump together the CD32 (for Europe), the Jaguar (for the U.S.) and the PC-FX and FM Towns Marty (for Japan), but then you're just echoing a Fifth Generation role call. The Market competition call out is to help illustrate that the 3DO had an odd existence bridging the two major platform generations. Also, consider this... competition is typically implied by marketing efforts and 3DO marketing was conducted against the SNES, SegaCD, PS, and Saturn. Most visibly against the later two. I suppose you could make a case that it didn't market directly against the PC Engine or N64, but those two systems were still significant competition during their time periods... but again, if you wanted to press the issue those two could be pulled from the lists. But that's about as far as I would take it myself.BcRIPster (talk) 03:15, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
