edit@Smokefoot: In reply to your edit comment saying "let's get one of a purer sample", is the 99% pure sample not good enough? This is my first sample pic upload so I'm not being facetitious; genuinely curious. Are you thinking about a single-crystal of it or something? Thanks. - Good idea to import photographs of compounds (and other stuff). That activity contributes to making Wiki-chem very useful. So I am very sorry to interfere. 4-Nitroaniline is yellow-orange. It is entirely reasonable that your sample is 99% pure (but how would you know?) and look bad because impurities in anilines especially can be intensely colored. This is a situation I have dealt with many times on Wikipedia.
- My hope is that we can find a photo of a purer sample for the ChemBox and then include your photo as a thumbnail photo illustrating what typical sample (vs compound!) looks like. --Smokefoot (talk) 21:42, 31 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Smokefoot: Thanks for the comment. My claim of 99% purity was based on what was printed on the newly unwrapped container. I see that it is indeed yellowish in color so I agree that this is not the right image for the infobox. I don't know if I'll ever purify it in glovebox but thanks for taking the time to reply here. - Thank you for your efforts and understanding. You dont need to work in a glovebox to clean it up, probably. These oxidations (being spin-forbidden) are slow. Just a short plug of silica gel will likely catch the crud and then evap the eluted solution, snap a pic and then you wiill have made a significant contribution. Notice that few (none that I could find) aniline articles have sample images, including aniline itself. Even the German Wiki is deficient, and they are usually very good. So I hope that you get a chance. It is also possible that it will sublime (black organic cmpds tend to be nonvolatile). --Smokefoot (talk) 00:26, 1 February 2022 (UTC)
