2d Armored Rifle Battalion, 48th Infantry

edit

The 2d ARB, 48th Infantry replaced the 29th Armored Infantry Battalion (AIB) at Gelnhausen on 1 October 1957. The 29th AIB was assigned to the 3d Armored Division when the division was at Ft. Knox prior to rotating to West Germany in the Spring of 1956 (May/June). As a 3d Armored Division unit, the 29th AIB went to Germany in the Spring of 1956 and was assigned to barracks at Gelnhausen previously occupied by units of the U.S. 4th Infantry Division, which had gyroscoped back to CONUS in conjuction with the 3d Armored Division's arrival in Germany. Of the three Combat Commands of the 3d Armored Division, Combat Command B (CCB) was assigned to Gelnhausen; in the ROAD reorganization of 1963 CCB became the 3d Armored Division's Second Brigade. Some said that armored infantry (which is the same as "mechanized infantry") was better suited to Fulda Gap defense than the "straight leg" infantry units of the 4th Infantry Division. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.14.218.248 (talk) 11:28, 29 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
