Hal Turner "controversy"?

I don't believe the Hal Turner ivasion merits its own section in the controversy section, because (a) 4chan and 7chan have both done quite a few invasions, some of which were more widespread than this (i.e. Tom Green) and (b) these events don;t really fit the definition of "controversy". Perhaps an ivasions section is in order? I don't mean to glorify these, but if we're interested in tracking such things this would be the better way to do it. I sort of agree, but if we want to have an invasions section, we need to have more sources of the other invasions like old Greeny and Girl talk and co. If we can't, I'd keep it where it is - it doesn't really deserve its own section, being so short. -Wooty Woot? contribs 18:46, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

Why isn't 7chan listed in (and redirected to) Imageboard? I'm pretty sure it's more active than either iichan or 420chan. If it is kept as a redirect to 4chan, perhaps something should be added to either the /b/ or Controversy sections about the infamous 'Policy enforcement' post. 12.65.36.47 05:16, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

7chan - New facts

A 7chan splitoff, the SecondLife group Patriotic Nigras, attacked a Democrat candidates SecondLife headquarters, something which was reported by several newspapers (There is even an "interview" with PN's leader.

This surely merits 7chan being more than a redirect to 4chan...?

Update: Flashy background and music both gone now. Today, moot returned to /b/. This has had an enormous impact on the site, and I feel that this should be posted somewhere in the article, though I can't edit it since it's protected: "On March 26, 2007, moot returned to /b/ after an e-mail he received which made him reconsider the situation into which /b/ had gotten itself. Lot's of additions needed.

I was just going to start editing away but I figured I would take it up with you lot first. There is a LOT missing from this article.

• ADTRW. 4chan was first advertised to the ADTRW subforum in the SomethingAwful forums. As such, the primary userbase was largely ADTRW users. So much so that in the beginning moot had to address them about their "elitest attitude" towards new members. The articles mentions "anime fans", but no mention of ADTRW. I think this is too important to the foundation of 4chan to ignore.
• Domain. 4chan used to be 4chan.net before GoDaddy locked and suspended the domain. On 2/16/04 4chan.org was brought online.
• Dates. You randomly start throwing out dates about when the new trial boards were created and stuff, but the important boards get no mention. /h/ was created on 10/2/03. /c/, /y/, and /d/ on 10/6/03. /s/ (and /g/ (guro), although it was removed quickly) on 10/9/03. /a/ and /l/ (lolikon, which was closed and branched into not4chan, which also deserves mention) on 11/08/03. On 11/02/03 moot wiped the SQL tables and the postcount was reset. /r/ was created on 1/8/04 because /t/ was full of requests. /f/ on 2/19/04. There are other important dates as well.
• The software. There is no mention of the highly customized rebuild of futaba that 4chan runs on. Moot originally translated the PHP that 2ch released as futaba. Then 4channer thatdog optimized it and called it futallaby. Then Snacks cleaned it up and made it what we know today and called it "W.T. Snacks' super-hacked futallaby". Snacks added all the simple functionality that makes 4chan so usable today. The linkbacks (>>postnum), the hidden replies, being able to reply to a thread with an image, the original filename being saved, and way more. Not to mention he wrote up.php, which is what runs /f/. But it's highly customized and one of a kind and it deserves mention.
• Blocks. 4chan has blocked several blocks of users in the past. A lot of cox.net users (unblocked on 2/8/04) and all of japan (on and off several times).
• IRC. 4chan has a strong IRC following and there is no mention of it. The first IRC channel was #4chan on irc.pyoko.org, announced on 4/4/04. There were several server changes throughout the years. They don't all need to be mentioned but IRC does deserve a mention. Especially since it's pretty much the only place you can talk to staff.
• Ups and Downs. 4chan has been on the brink of disaster pretty much all of it's life. Donations have kept it going since almost the very start. Most notably DONATE OR DIE 2005, although donations were asked for and made long before this. Mention should be made of this. Especially the Paypal/Yowcow scandal and all that.
• Conventions. We have had repeat panels at AnimeUSA and Otakon. Pretty big ones. I think they might deserve mention.
• Servers. Although 4chan has had countless server/datacenter changes, I think mentioning the Dells that were purchased after Donate or Die are worth mention. That was the first time 4chan was on it's own hardware.

All of this (even the dates) can be cited right back to the News posts. If you would bother to check them. Go down the list, I am positive they are all there. As far as attribution, 4chan itself complies with ATT. The content that is in the article now isn't neccesarily attributable. Re:ADTRW - there was a discussion on this in archive 4 Talk:4chan/Archive 4#Something Awful - there was never really a consensus on how to present the origin other than "moot did it." Most of the other points you make are only can only be sourced to http://www.4chan.org/news.php?all, and primary sources should be used carefully and sparingly. Shoop da Whoop

Another thing redirected here but never mentioned. This would sort of confuse readers, because anyone who wants to know what "shoop da whoop" is about exactly (like me) are redirected to a page that says nothing about it. I think the section should either be added or it should be mentioned somewhere in the article, or the redirect should be deleted so those who search this topic know that there is no information concerning it on this 4chan page.
