Reinforcement of NATO
editThe following text was removed from the article on 14 January 2015:
The group was reactivated following Secretary of State John Foster Dulles' promise to provide NATO with four additional tactical fighter wings to increase its defenses against the Soviet Union due to the outbreak of the Cold War.[1]
The cited reference does not support the statement. If a reliable source for this can be found, it could be restored in modified form. If this promise was made, it would originally have influenced a plan to move the 140th Wing. The activation of the 50th was a change in name only. By 1953, replacements and reassignments had made guard units indistinguishable from regular and activated reserve units in terms of their personnel. The 50th was activated when the 140th completed 18 months on active duty, which, I believe, was a statutory limit on the length of time National Guard units could serve on active duty. --Lineagegeek (talk) 17:34, 14 January 2015 (UTC)
An unreferenced statement "This [Fox Able 20] marked the first mass flight of an entire F-86 fighter bomber group from the United States to continental Europe." I can not find any source for this. There had been 19 previous deployments, and the flight (presumably along the northern route since the F-86F did not have an air refueling capability) is not particularly remarkable since SAC fighters were already making non stop flights across the Atlantic as early as 1950. --Lineagegeek (talk) 22:48, 16 January 2015 (UTC)
