Note: while Geoffrey of Monmouth states Arthur died this year is not historical fact. From the few historical notices for Britain that have survived, it is clear he died decades before: Gildas, who wrote at this time, clearly states that the Battle of Mons Badonicus was 44 years before. While some scholars follow Bede & read this passage as dating this battle 44 years after the arrival of the Anglo Saxons, it would force Arthur's flourit to an even earlier date.

Also, Geoffrey's historical reliability is frequently called into question. While I personally believe he based his work on British traditions of his age, even to accept this is to say he was reproducing with mistakes an unreliable source.
