The article says: "555 17th Street was built as the 'Anaconda Tower', a name it was given for its distinctive reflection and textured black glass facade." I believe this is incorrect. The building was named the Anaconda Tower because it housed corporate offices of the Anaconda Copper Company. I'm actually thinking this was supposed to be its headquarters but I'm having a hard time imagining them having moved from Butte, MT. However it all became moot when ARCO (Atlantic Richfield) bought Anaconda around the same time the building was completed. If I can dig up some actual documentation, I'll change the article. ALSO, Deloitte & Touche is a not law firm, its a financial auditing and consulting company. Gdsawyer (talk) 04:39, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
The information stating that the Anaconda Tower name was related to the texture of the exterior glass is unsubstantiated nonsense. I have removed that line, since it's unreferenced. I'm 100% sure the building was originally named because of its namesake tenant, the Anaconda Co. who relocated their headquarters to Denver in 1978, moving from midtown Manhattan (where they had been headquartered since the 1920s) to Denver in 1978. A quick Google search will find several articles referencing the 1978 move (but non contain the actual 555 17th address). Also, one can find via Google multiple old documents showing the Anaconda Co. or its divisions including the Anaconda Copper Company as having headquarters at that address. I don't have the diligence to find a watertight referece just now. I'm not 100% sure it needs a reference. (Would you require a statement saying the Sears tower in Chicago was originally built for Sears Roebuck & Co. to be referenced?) If someone wants to delete my edit referring to it as originally the headquarters of The Anaconda Comapany for lack of a reference, go for it. What I won't add to the article is that I believe that the building was acquired by Anschutz after ARCO shut down the Anaconda operations in the mid-80s. It was still officially known as The Anaconda Tower well into the 1990s (I remember the sign at ground level) when Qwest moved in (where was Mountain Bell's original headquarters?). Then some vain idiot decided that it needed to be renamed the Qwest Tower, and mounted an ugly lighted Qwest sign atop building sometime in the late 90s.BSMet94 (talk) 21:29, 30 January 2012 (UTC)
