I have found contradictory information as to the assignment of a Colonel John Nixon of the Continental Army

I have found contradictory information as to the assignment of a Colonel John Nixon of the Continental Army. Based on the below mentioned document, it appears to show Thomas Nixon as Colonel of the 6th Reg. and John Nixon as Colonel of the 5th Reg. After April 19,1775, Lt. Colonel Thomas Nixon is given command of the 4th Reg, then promoted to full Colonel and assigned to the 6th Reg. In fact my notes state that the 4th Continental Reg. became the 6th Massachusetts Reg.

It is tough to track the actual regiments through the war as numbering and naming conventions changed at different stages of the war. What I believe I have found is that John Nixon was in charge of the 5th Massachusetts Regt. from at least April 24th 1775- December 1775. It appears some time in 1776 after the British evacuation of Boston (March) and possibly during or after the battles of New York (August), he was promoted to Brig. General. So at this point is where it becomes foggy. It looks like Rufus Putnam became Colonel of the 5th Regt., and both Putnam's 5th and Thomas Nixon's 6th Regt. came under John Nixon's Brigade.
