74TH MOTORIZED BRIGADE TO BE MANNED WITH PROFESSIONALS BY YEAR-END 2006

YURGA/Kemerovo Region, February 3 (RIA Novosti) - The 74th Separate Zvenigorod-Berlin
Motorized Brigade deployed in Yurga, Kemerovo Region (coal-mining region in the
south of Western Siberia), will be fully manned with contract servicemen by the end of 2006, Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said Thursday at a meeting with the brigade's personnel attended by journalists.
"By late 2006, the 74th Brigade should be fully manned by about 3,000 professionals," the minister said. He praised the professionalism of the brigade, which "is one of the most combat-ready," he said.
"Transition to contract service will include the construction of new barracks for contract servicemen and development of the training and material base," Mr. Ivanov added. The 74th Brigade incorporates motorized battalions, a tank battalion, artillery battalions, and auxiliary units. The brigade was created from the overhauled 94th Guards Infantry Zvenigorod-Berlin Division, a separate guards

On April 28, 1943, the 94th Division was formed of two Marine brigades that took part in the Stalingrad offensive. Over a half of its servicemen fought under Stalingrad, which is why the division had been immediately granted the tile "guards."
The minister has moved on to Kemerovo, the capital city of the region, where he will
meet with governor Aman Tuleyev. Sergei Ivanov will spend only a few hours in
Kemerovo before going to Abakan, where he will visit the 5th Separate Railway Brigade and meet with head of Khakassia Alexei Lebedev. After that, the minister will go to Chita, where he will visit the 45th Automotive Brigade and a tank center, and meet with Chita region's Governor, which will end the minister's working tour of the Siberian Military District and he will return to Moscow.
