editDO NOT MERGE. A-shirt is the proper term. The vulgar slang "wifebeater" should remain on it's own.
- The question is not so much what is the proper term as whether we need a separate article for each synonym of a given term. It is inefficient to maintain multiple articles that are about the same thing and are bound to end up with a confused mix of duplicated and divergent information on them. IMO we should have one article, which describes the general characteristics of such a garment and also gives information on each name. -- Smjg 19:11, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
- I can see the merit in having a separate article for A-shirt, since tank top and muscle shirt each have their own page, linked from the wifebeater article. If all of those types of shirts can be called wifebeaters (I'm not familiar with the usage of the slang term to describe a muscle shirt, but that doesn't necessarily make it wrong, I guess), then each type should have its own article. If that's the case, then this article needs to be rewritten to reflect the differences between it and, for instance, a tank top. On the other hand, if we agree that wifebeater is a slang term for A-shirt and pretty much nothing else, then they should be merged. Thoughts? Jaye 15:11, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
- Wikipedia has articles for A-shirt, wifebeater, tank top, muscle shirt, and sleeveless T-shirt. I agree with Jaye that we shoud only keep articles for the terms which have real differences between them. Based on that, how about merging & redirecting "sleeveless t-shirt" and "muscle shirt" into "A-shirt"? --Alex S 04:07, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
- Here's what I propose, based on my knowledge of the subject, and if anyone has any reasons to the contrary I'd love to hear them: First, I'm pretty sure "sleeveless t-shirt" and "muscle shirt" are the same thing. They should be merged. Second, "tank top" is its own thing, as it's a type of athletic outergarment. Third, "a-shirt" is also its own thing, as it's generally an undergarment (and therefore not a "tank top"), but should have the "wifebeater" info merged into it because "wifebeater" is generally accepted to be slang for an a-shirt being worn alone as an outergarment. So, in short, we should condense the five articles into three, leaving only a-shirt, tank top, and muscle shirt. Jaye 17:26, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
- I vote for merging. They are two definitions for the same object. Unless the article is too big and needs divifding, they should be combined--sin-man 06:16, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
- As I see it, we have A-shirt, tank top, sleeveless T-shirt and wifebeater which are basically talking about the same thing. The terms muscle shirt and vest have some overlap in meaning. And there is also a paragraph at the beginning of singlet, which ought to be cleaned up a bit. IMO we should have one article for the basic garment, which would of course have a section covering the various names. If any of the names needs more than a sentence or two of explanation, then a subsection of this page could do it. Only in the case of terms that have a notable semantic difference does it make sense to have separate articles.
- Of course, the distinction (and blurring thereof) between the undergarment and the outer garment does indeed make things a bit more complicated.... -- Smjg 00:02, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- I think that's a good idea. So, what should the title of the page be? Jaye 14:38, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
Oh my god! Wife beaters are better! What is a a-shirt?!?!?
