Only one bypass. Was the Clayton by-pass in Congleton not pre 1955?

this site suggests pre-WWII.

The original route was Winchester to Oxford only. The remainer of the route was added in the 1930s. Oxford to Wolverhampton was the A42 (cf. the present road) and Wolverhampton to Salford part of the A449.

Wolves to Newcastle-under-Lyne was A449. Newcastle - Salford was A526 (A526 is now a short road leading south from the M57 at junction 3) Richard B 18:00, 27 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

If the route has 'grown' northwards would it not make more sense to re-write the route description from south to north? OK, I know, get a life. Pterre 20:35, 6 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

In 1990, I'm sure I remember this road extending all the way to southampton. It was converted into the M3 when the twyford down cutting was completed in 1994.

You're remembering the A33.
I also always thought of it as the 'Southampton to Birmingham' road, rather than terminating at Winchester, but was mistaken. The OS One Inch Fifth Ed Map dated 1939 (without the original Winchester By-pass) shows the A31, A33 and A272 passing through the middle of Winchester, but the A34 (the current B3420 Andover Road) ending on the northern side of town. Between Winchester and Southampton were the A33 on the west side of the Itchen through Chandler's Ford, and the A333/335 on the east side through Twyford and Eastleigh. The Sixth Ed dated 1962 (which has the by-pass as the A33) is no different. Later maps (Landranger 1974,1990) show the 34 and 31 being diverted via the by-pass, but the 34 never gets south of Winchester. Pterre 20:35, 6 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
