Proper designation for the Avenger.
editUnfortunately, M1097 is not the proper designation for the Avenger. M1097 is the designation for the HMMWV that carries the Avenger turret, but this designation does not apply to the whole system. The actual designation is Avenger Air Defense Weapons System, AN/TWQ-1. I think the article name should be changed to reflect this. PistolPete037 (talk) 21:13, 12 January 2009 (UTC)
- Excellent observation. I think AN/TWQ-1 Avenger would be appropriate for the purpose of this encyclopedia. Koalorka (talk) 22:06, 12 January 2009 (UTC)
- if your going to use the Joint Electronics Type Designation System name, then you should explain it.Brian in denver (talk) 21:29, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
text removed
editI have removed this text as it seem irrelevant to the article. More relevent to an article on the HMMWV/Hummer. I think it has been edited away from it's original purpose in showing the Avenger required a Hummer modified for greater load carrying?
- "The M1097, M1097A1, and M1097A2 and M1123 HMMWVs are specifically designed to accommodate a higher payload capacity. The HMMWVs are equipped with a reinforced frame, crossmembers, lifting shackles, heavy duty rear springs, shock absorbers, reinforced control arms, heavy duty tires and rims, and a transfer case and differential with modified gear ratio. The M1097A2 models have new bumpers, which make the vehicles slightly longer. A 9,000 lb winch is also available for the M1097A2 models as an option."
multi-weapon Avenger
edithttp://www.spacewar.com/reports/Boeing_pushes_for_multi-weapon_Avenger_999.html AFPS carries what Boeing calls its "classic" Avenger weapon, the Stinger surface-to-air missile. But it can field an array of other weapons, including the AIM-9X surface-to-air missile, which has longer range than the Stinger.
- Note the lack of mention of the cancellation of the SLAMRAAM system in this oh so hopeful press release. Hcobb (talk) 13:43, 15 February 2011 (UTC)
The specs are WAY off...
editI took the lb/ft/in specs as the true ones, and recomputed the metric ones. So, 8600 pounds = 3900kg, 7ft 2in = 2.18m, 275 miles = 440km (I doubt that "275" is meant to mean "274.5 to 275.5 miles, depending on road conditions", so I rounded the number to 10's of km), 55mph = 89kph (unchanged--would like to put 90 here but since 55 is such a prominent figure, I didn't), and 135hp = 99kW if rounded correctly.
I cannot find how to edit the infobox which still has the old specs... 217.251.152.88 (talk) 07:43, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
M242 Bushmaster variant? Really?!
editThere is no possible way an M242 can be fired from an Avenger in place of an M3P. Or rather, there is no possible way it could be done *twice*. I've worked with both the Bradley and the Avenger, and attempting to fire the M242 from the Avenger's off-center mount would either rip part of the turret's side straight out and send the weapon cartwheeling across the landscape, or warp the entire turret to the point where the vehicle would need to come in for a replacement. Blacklisted Links Found on the Main Page
editCyberbot II has detected that page contains external links that have either been globally or locally blacklisted. Links tend to be blacklisted because they have a history of being spammed, or are highly innappropriate for Wikipedia. This, however, doesn't necessarily mean it's spam, or not a good link. If the link is a good link, you may wish to request whitelisting by going to the request page for whitelisting. If you feel the link being caught by the blacklist is a false positive, or no longer needed on the blacklist, you may request the regex be removed or altered at the blacklist request page. If the link is blacklisted globally and you feel the above applies you may request to whitelist it using the before mentioned request page, or request its removal, or alteration, at the request page on meta. When requesting whitelisting, be sure to supply the link to be whitelisted and wrap the link in nowiki tags. The whitelisting process can take its time so once a request has been filled out, you may set the invisible parameter on the tag to true. Please be aware that the bot will replace removed tags, and will remove misplaced tags regularly.

Lead must summarize
editThis entire paragraph from the main article would be a strong addition to the lead:
The first operational deployment of the system occurred during the buildup for the Persian Gulf War.
With the success of this deployment, the US Army signed an additional contract for another 679 vehicles, bringing the total order to 1,004 units.
The Avenger was again successfully deployed in support of NATO operations during the Bosnian War.
The Avenger system received widespread public exposure when it was placed around the Pentagon during the first anniversary of the September 11 attacks of 2001.
The Avenger was also deployed during the US military's operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Claims of destroyed Ukrainian units
editThe only source for these claims is a unreliable YouTube channel that parrots Russian propaganda. No losses are listed on the Oryx website, nor any other source. QBCDesigns (talk) 16:36, 17 July 2023 (UTC)
- Oryx? OSINT-like website cannot be reliable source. General David Petraeus' completely positive reviews confirm the bias of this site. Halfcookie (talk) 17:13, 17 July 2023 (UTC)
