Inspiration for Superman's "Daily Planet" building?

edit

Okay, the old link was broken, but I was able to find the interview reprinted in another article:

Shuster also said in the article that Superman's city, Metropolis, was modelled after Toronto, not Cleveland, where he was living at the time he first drew the superhero.

"Cleveland was not nearly as metropolitan as Toronto was, and it was not as big or as beautiful," he said.

"Whatever buildings I saw in Toronto remained in my mind and came out in the form of Metropolis."

So we have Shuster saying that Metropolis was based on Toronto's architecture (specifically disclaiming any Cleveland connection), and the company that owns the Ohio Bell building saying that he based Metropolis's signature building on theirs. Given that the company obviously has a financial interest, I'm yielding to the artist's words and deleting the reference. If anyone can find a reference in which Shuster specifically states an exception for the Daily Planet, please add back in. --Chancemichaels 18:41, 25 July 2007 (UTC)ChancemichaelsReply
