I was asked by emiail: "You put up a proposed deletion for the page of the book about Tierno Bokar, "A Spirit of Tolerance: The Inspiring Life of Tierno Bokar". I was wondering why? Tierno Bokar is a person of obvious significance; books and plays have been written about his life. The page I put up is about the *only* English-language translation of the well-known book about his life. It was this book that brought him to the attention of the Western world, without it his fame would not be what it is. > > What do I need to do to establish its notability? How is this book less notable than (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dateline:_Troy) or (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amy%27s_Eyes)? I ask this sincerely; I believe this book is of importance and I want to know what I should do to help it fit Wikipedia standards. Thank you for your help,"
and I replied
I think the man is important. His importance is shown by the work he has done, and proven by the fact that books are written about him. To show the book is notable, you need to show that it is notable independently--that it has in in own right won an important award or become a notable best seller. There is another route--to change the article to a redirect, so those who look up the title will be automatically transferred to the article on Bokar.
I'm known around wikipedia as an inclusionist. I want an article about everything important. One article. The individual biographies of Darwin ,or Marx, or for that matter Mohammed, do not have individual articles in WP. Perhaps some of them should--there are some that have won major literary and historical awards. Can one say the same about this.? DGG (talk) 00:23, 2 October 2007 (UTC)
Removed Deletion Notice
editGiven that the book pertains to three separate people - Tierno Bokar about whom the book was written, Amadou Hampate Ba who wrote it, and Peter Brook who adapted the book into a play - I don't think it makes sense to absorb the information about the book into any one page. Therefore, I removed the deletion notice before the page was automatically deleted. Temp07 21:34, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
