editPerhaps the article would benefit from a general discussion of pigmentation in the Drosophila genus, with D. melanogaster as the genetic model? This would let the concept be introduced with relatively simple examples of very clear differences in pigmentation amongst species. For instance, the key subgenera (Sophophora and Drosophila) are defined by whether the abdominal stripes are continuous or broken. This would ground the reader in a very basic understanding of what "variation in abdominal pigmentation" can mean, and provide a relatively simple phenotype to show in article images.
