Notes
editSince its more accurate. --Striver 00:28, 13 February 2006 (UTC)
Who cares if it is more "accurate"? The name in Arabic is Abdullah. In Classical/Qur'anic Arabic the "u" is improtant as it shows ownership. Just like "Ruhullah" (a spirit by Allah) which is used in the Qur'an as a nickname for angel Gabriel. Striver, are you Muslim? Have you read the Qur'an? Can you transliterate from Classical (voewel indicating) Arabic? I'm not Muslim, but I own a Qur'an and I can at least sound out the letters in Arabic. Perhaps we need the opinions of a few Muslims and Arabic "speakers"? -User:ZyXoas 09:59, 17 February 2006 (UTC)
- Ok, then lets rename it to Abd'u-llah (name). --Striver 19:28, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
- That is also wrong. Please leave the page alone. Read the MOS and learn how to transliterate before you go around changing things. Cuñado - Talk 17:52, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

Redlinked names
editHi Euryalus - where is the rule against redlinks on a page such as this? I believe that there is good reason for disambiguating a number of people with very similar names, so that if readers go looking for Abdul Abdullah the athlete or basketball player, they can be more easily located. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 12:26, 26 October 2021 (UTC)
- Hi @Laterthanyouthink:! It's mentioned at WP:LISTCRIT and at WP:CSC, re not including entirely uncited redlinks where no article seems likely to follow.
- If these people have independent notability it shouldn't be hard for someone to create the standard sports article about them with some barebones details of their career. This would satisfy LISTCRIT. If that can't be done then at the least it should e possiblet o add an RS reference showing they have notability enough for a future article. This would satisfy WP:CSC. Absent either of these I can't see a rationale for including them.
- Of course there's grey areas, as there always is with notability. I'm also monolingual with no knowledge of sports: for all I know there's some amazing references out there that make clear these people are truly notable enough for inclusion. All I'd ask then is either the usual sports star stub article, or a single RS reference supporting this point. Then the rules are satisfied. :)
- As an example I'd strongly differentiate these two seemingly non-notable redlinks from the ones you have at List of ships named Lalla Rookh (interesting list btw) where the descriptors attached to each redlink include actual sources and so meet the WP:CSC criteria as "likely articles not yet written." But again, absent their own articles or any linked sources -- or even really any claim to notability in the text -- it's hard to see a reason for including these two sportspeople on this particular page.
- Hope that answers the question on why I thought these should be removed. Your views welcome though, even if you heartily disagree with all the above. -- Euryalus (talk) 13:30, 26 October 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Euryalus! Thanks for the detailed explanation. As this is a set index page rather than a list or DAB though, wouldn't it follow WP:SETNOTDAB (which I was too tired to find last night)? The link to the article gives a clue to who they are, and this seems to me better than not finding them at all, or having to trawl through multiple articles on a search. I guess one could try to find a citation to put next to their names as well... I was adding those names when I was trying to distinguish between others of the same name, for completeness, and didn't dig further because I didn't think it was necessary (and I'm not at all interested in sport in general, only some football (soccer) occasionally). I'll leave it up to you though - I don't see it as a big issue; it's just that my old librarian hat drives me to provide as many pointers to find info as much as is possible within the wiki rules. I don't have enough interest or will to create more articles about sportsmen at this point.
- Ha ha, thanks - that Lalla Rookh ship page was supposed to be a quick list as a spin-off from the Lalla Rookh DAB page... ended up being a major project taking weeks (which I try to forget about completely or I'll be there for the rest of my life trying to find those other mystery ships)! Doesn't عبد actually mean "slave" in Arabic? The Arabic word for "servant" is خادم. 98.123.38.211 (talk) 17:17, 1 September 2024 (UTC)
