village, not city

edit

[www.un.org/unrwa/emergency/barrier/profiles/abu_dis.pdf UNWRA PDF], UNWRA HTML - calls it a village, but lists a population upwards of 10,000. I found a Hebrew language source at slightly less (8000). In any event, while it may not be a city, Abu Dis isn't a village in the conventional sense. The question then, is whether places traditionally known as villages can continue to be called such after swelling in population, or whether places like this should be called towns or some other name. As an aside, some settlements, like Efrat or Kiryat Arba, are considered municipalities (read cities?) even though the former is around 8,000, and the latter around 5,000. I wouldn't want the percieved downgrading to be construed by one side as POV. Let me know what you think. TewfikTalk 05:11, 16 May 2006 (UTC) (P.S. Thanks for support on the settlement issue)Reply

i think that generally the term "town" should be employed for settlements, of any ethnic makeup, that are larger than villages but smaller than towns. according to Israeli criteria, a village has up to 2000 residents. i think that the common usage of the word "village" would refer to even smaller places than that. in the case of Abu dis the phrase "suburb" could also be appropriate. edit

I don't see how a picture of children on a rooftop is relevant to this article, or Wikipedia in general. Does anyone have a picture of Abu Dis itself, or notable locations in Abu Dis, or at least notable personalities from Abu Dis, for use in this article? In any case, I think the current image needs to be removed. -- Ynhockey (Talk) 19:56, 6 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Some references quote a book by one Singer published in 1992 (or 1994), probably concerning the history of Abu Dis during the Ottoman period, but I have been unable to trace it. Nescio vos (talk) 16:00, 25 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

It is this book. I fixed the citations. Zerotalk 00:09, 26 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
