- Thanks, but unfortunately nobody in that photograph is wearing a stole - they're all wearing hoods, which are entirely different garments. A hood hangs down the back of the gown, while a stole (which is more common in an ecclesiastical context than an academic one) hangs down the front; it's not to be confused with facings, which are basically the lapels of the gown, and which are also sometimes made of a different colour or material to the rest of the gown.
