Assertion that it was Built by Enslaved People
editThe following characterization was added in 2020, with no source whatsoever: "Built with the forced labor of enslaved people..." Edits removing it and adding it back have been made, with no discussion by either side here on the talk page.
Without a source, its truth as an assertion is unknown. Maybe Accokeek was built by enslaved people. Maybe it was built by indentured servants. Maybe it was built by employees of the owner. Maybe it was built by contractors. Maybe it was built by a combination of the above.
The fact that it has been changed, back and forth, with no discussion or the identification of a reliable source strongly suggests that none exists.
While it's certainly true that a lot of construction during that period was done, in whole or in part, by enslaved people, that is something that can best be addressed on pages discussing that period generally. It does not mean that this particular plantation was built entirely by enslaved people, or that such a fact, if indeed true, is meaningful to its unique history.
