Antisemitism debate in Germany

edit

In Germany, there has been a huge debate over whether Mbeme is guilty of antisemitism, started by a government official. All hig newspapers and many culturally important people weighed in. A result was Mbeme not wanting to work in Germany again.

This is broadly discussed in the German Wiki, but not at all mentioned in the english one.

Can it be added there? JSteed (talk) 21:40, 19 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

The German wikibio has an absurdly long coverage, a severe case of WP:Undue. It is true that there has been a very worried debate following the incident in question. I think it merits three lines here, no more, with a link to Antisemitism in Germany where the broader cultural uproar could get the attention it gets in his German wiki bio.Nishidani (talk) 22:09, 19 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

It is appropriate for this to be mentioned here, but this comes under BLP rules, and one should get the gist of the complaint correct, neutrally and of course in normal English. The text added runs thus:

==Antisemitism allegations==

In 2020, Felix Klein, German Federal Government Commissioner for the Fight agains Antisemitism, alleged Mbembe of antisemitism and demanded Mbembe to be expelled from the Ruhrtriennale, where the historian was planned to give the opening speech.[1] This was followed by an intense debate in Germany with Mbembe opposing the allegatoins. The controversy finally led to Mbembe substaining from further public appearences in Germany, according to Thomas Oberender, director of the Berliner Festspiele.[2]

  1. ^ Protest gegen Auftritt von Mbembe. Jüdische Allgemeine, 17. April 2020.
  2. ^ Stefan Braun. "BDS-Debatte: „Erst jenseits des Grundgesetzes hört die Debatte auf"" (in German).
  • The first source is unnecessary as partisan. This has been widely covered in mainstream German newspapers
  • The English is garbled as per the bolding.
  • No mention is made of the woman who invited him; the blogger who emailed 3 snippets from his 9 volumes, all out of context; the law under which pressure was made to disinvite him; the fate of the Berlin director; the debate that later arose among in some 25 groups of notable German cultural figures who expressed deep concern about how this was handled, and the potential threat to freedom of speech constituted by the law, and the event; he didn't 'abstain'. He vigorously protested, and withdrew in disgust.

I may have got this wrong in some details, but that is what I remember from reading of this case several times (I didn't even know of him until I read these reports, hence I bookmarked this page)-

We have a perfectly bilingual editor who can handle this topic both with the precision and neutrality required for a BLP article. If he can't afford the time, I will try to rework the above, so that the episode can be included.Nishidani (talk) 21:23, 20 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Please, can somebody of you help to improve https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Achille_Mbembe ? Some MOM in german Wikipedia seized the article and stain the image of Wikipedia in whole.--Conakry (talk) 14:02, 25 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

I deleted the paragraph because of a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Copyright_violations. The entire affaire is described at length in https://metropol-verlag.de/produkt/jenseits-von-mbembe-geschichte-erinnerung-solidaritaet/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.182.199.246 (talk) 10:47, 15 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
