Wiki Education assignment: WikiProject Medicine Fall 2024 UCF COM - Block 6
editThis article is currently the subject of a Wiki Education Foundation-supported course assignment, between 21 October 2024 and 17 November 2024. Further details are available on the course page. Student editor(s): Tsuki1995 (article contribs).

Student Workplan:
- - editing the lead section to improve its readability and flow (ex: providing examples of mucous membranes it can appear on, explain "spread" more)
- - expand upon the signs and symptoms section, consider discussing differences in presentation between different races/ethnicities
- - provide more information about the causes section and add additional references
- - consider adding images to the diagnosis section to aid understanding of the biopsy process
- - editing the language used for the histology section to make it more readable and accessible to non-medical individuals
- - update the treatment section with new forms of treatment and appropriate references, will not go into details about the MOA of each drug
- - add a new section "differential diagnoses" that would discuss mimics/things that are mistaken for ALM
- - add a new section on prophylactic or preventative measures if applicable with references
- - expand upon the prognosis section with reasoning as to why there is poorer prognosis for ALM
Overall notes: article is neutral in tone and the content is relevant without many distractors. There could be more references added for some facts. Current sources are neutral and links are active. There is content I think could be added as noted above that would be helpful for the article. Things to make sure to include are warning signs that people should look out for, diagnosis, and prognosis. The intricacies of the various medications used are not necessary. I do plan to embed other articles as appropriate. I will do my best to avoid medical terms and use plain language with the assistance of the Hemmingway tool.--Tsuki1995 (talk) 17:10, 22 October 2024 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tsuki1995 (talk • contribs) 15:33, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
WikiProject Medicine Block 6 Peer Review
editHi Tsuki1995, please see my feedback below.
Lead: The lead is very succinct and provides a great introduction to the diagnosis. I like how you gave a broad overview of melanoma. I believe your edits have improved the articles readability and flow. I do wonder if the incidence paragraph can be moved into a new or different section, such as Epidemiology.
Signs and Symptoms: Very well done! I think this section very appropriately describes the clinical signs and symptoms of the diagnosis in nice detail. Further, I like how you explained the CUBED rule from the ABCDE rule and mentioned uncommon/nonspecific symptoms.
Causes: Short and sweet section. Perhaps expand on injury or mechanical stress playing a role.
Diagnosis: Great section! Provides appropriate sourcing from the text needed to diagnose the disorder. I appreciate the succinct, yet informative Histology section and the use of an image to help depict the histology.
Treatment: Great expansion to this section with sources. I appreciate the minimal medical jargon.
Prognosis: Nicely added discussion on why ALM usually has a poorer prognosis.
Prevention: Good section to have included!
Differential Diagnoses: I think this section is crucial to the article and may need some expansion. You did a wonderful job adding other similarly presenting conditions that others must consider in the diagnosis. It might benefit from expanding slightly to explain why they were on the differential but can be excluded with further workup.
Additional Images: Great pictures! They help depict the punch biopsy and histology of the condition.
Overall, great work on contributions to the page! Way to keep the tone neutral and content relevant! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Userofwiki12345 (talk • contribs) 17:45, 12 November 2024 (UTC)
Hi Userofwiki12345!
Thank you for your edits, they were helpful! I've gone ahead and made a new epidemiology section as you suggested. I chose not to explain the mechanical stress route further as it's not fully agreed upon whether it actually plays a role in the development of ALM, but there have been some studies that suggest this and I wanted to just mention it as a possibility since the cause of ALM is still not well understood. I've also added a bit to the differential section to explain why they're on the differential and how they can be distinguished. Thanks again! Tsuki1995 (talk) 15:37, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
