Cross context articles

edit

I'd like to see some articles that compare understandings of acting out across contexts. If you have any links please post them.

Acting-in

edit

There is another term "acting-in" that complements the "acting-out" behavior.

When an addict is de-escalating his behavior - he is often "acting-in" - going to another extreme behavior. E.g. a sex addict may become completely abstinent for few days, compulsive overeater may eat too little, etc.

I tried to add that term to wikipedia - but it gets deleted.

Maybe it should be part of this article instead? Saaraleigh 19:06, 18 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sounds good, please add it. 212.56.88.63 21:30, 12 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I don't think it sounds good, I think it sounds dreadful. And I can't find a single entry for it in Google on in any dictionary. Please don't treat WP as some kind of huge garbage dump in which Each, All, and Every thing that anybody has thought of MUST find a place. As it is, acting out, as far as I can see is a very simple idea, and in this page is it explained rather obtusely. Myles325a (talk) 10:08, 30 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Acting out? Do mean like George Washington committing treason? HaHa! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.141.222.87 (talk) 21:09, 17 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

"meaning to perform an action in contrast to bearing and managing the impulse to perform it. "

It took me a long time to make any sense of the above definition, because I associated the final 'it' with 'the impulse' instead of 'an action' ! I was going to re-word it to be clearer, but looking for better definitions, I found http://counsellingresource.com/features/2008/10/21/acting-up-is-not-acting-out/ which suggests this definition is actually wrong, which may be why the rest of the rest of the article is confusing.
