Solo / group

There is a lot of overlap - and some inconsistency - with the separate article on Adam and the Ants - needs some tidying up. YEAH -- I'll say! For example, the article quotes Adam and the Ants as splitting up in 1984 but then goes on to tell the reader about Adam Ant's first solo hit in .... 1982. Did someone say ... "DUUUUUUUH"?

Solo/group cleanup

I'm working on cleaning up the Adam Ant and Adam & the Ants articles, mainly removing duplicate information. All comments are welcome, here or on Talk:Adam & the Ants. Econrad 00:11, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

Film Actor

According to IMDB, Adam Ant appeared in 25 films or TV episodes between 1977 and 1999, so I figured that his status as a film actor should be included in the lead. I've added that sentence, but I apparently don't know how to add references because my reference link is not working. Can someone fix this or point me to instructions on how to fix it?Orayzio 23:08, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

New romantic

New Romantic was a lose term that collected a varied bag of New Wave bands under a shared penchant for clothes, image, and a post-punk/Goth sound that usually meant heavy synths, though Adam and the Ants didn't have an elctro sound at all.

Adam Ant a New Romantic? Where does that come from? Zik-Zak

The music press labeled him in with the New romantic scene even though Adam and the Ants had nothing to do with it. (The press does love it's boxes)[Antx]
Also the magazine NME Originals proudly presents The ‘80s, an A-Z of The New Romantics featured Adam Ant (in his Prince Charming make up) as their cover art. Information and picture here http://www.backstreetmerch.com/nme/item.asp?id=nmeo04 Antmusic 21:36, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

I have added all 3 of Adam's first albums. I know the names and dates because I own them. I have the LP, Dirk Wears White Socks, bought at a small used & new record shop in London when my wife and I were on a vacation in London. To the best of my knowledge it has never been released in the US, as vinyl or CD. The other 2 I have both the original LP and the later re-released CD. --Bill W. Oh, my I feel like an idiot. I did not realize y'all had separated Adam's first 3 albums with the Ants to a separate page! I will immediately remove my additions. --Bill W. Smith, Jr. 04:52, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

Adam's B-sides and remixes

There is a singles section in this article, but it doesn't include all of his solo singles (looks like it is just the 45s... I added the 12"s for Strip and Puss because they have different versions of the a sides and b sides. Do we want to add the Vive Le Rock remix releases and all the CD singles with their B-Sides and Remixes (Wonderful, Beautiful Dream, Room at the Top)? Do we want to create a seperate Adam Ant discography page so as not to clutter up this one? Antmusic 21:23, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

I did the original singles discog, I have just added the Apollo 9 and Vive le Rock 12"s, I can add the seperate cd single versions of Room At The Top- Gotta Be A Sin too when I have a spare moment Steveant 17:49, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

Ant seen in early pistols gigs

I deleted this, because it is untrue. If it IS true then *I* want to see where. (It may come from a mistaken sighting in the Sex Pistols' Filth and Fury film.) Steveant 10:59, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

Criminal Record

Didn't Adam Ant get done on a weapons charge? Could'a sworn I'd read that a few years back.

He did. Flapping a flintlock pistol around, wasn't he? --^pirate 22:12, 31 March 2006 (UTC)
Adam was arrested on Saturday, January 13, 2002 in London, England and he was charged with possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence. Adam was not carrying a real gun but a replica. He eventaully pleaded guilty to affray charges and on October 23, 2002 the court placed him under a 12 month community rehabilitation and fined £500. Picture problems

User:Quentin X has nominated the picture for speedy deletion (which I agree should not be used because this article does not discuss the book). Quentin X says that a "freely licensed image could reasonably be found" out there. So, I told them to please replace the book picture with one of the many free pictures of Adam Ant that are out there. I don't think that Quentin X will do that though. If you have a free picture of Adam Ant, or know where one is, please upload it! Thanks, Antmusic 19:28, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

Bipolar diagnosis

I just noticed the article mentions that Adam Ant was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at two different points in time:

[...]

and

[...]

This information can't be correct, but I don't know enough to fix it. I have a vague memory that I read or heard somewhere that Adam Ant had been suffering mental illness since the break-up of his first marriage. Can anyone confirm or deny this? It might be worth adding to the article.

Jammycaketin (talk) 16:43, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

I've removed this. As per WP:BLP, information like this "should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion". --JD554 (talk) 13:58, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

Adam was NOT a member of the Bromley Contingent

"firstly as one of the Bromley contingent who followed the original punk groups" This is incorrect, as is "the Ants were recruited by former Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren." Adam hired Malcolm Mcclaren in 1979 for one month to manage the Ants. In early 1980 they Ants decided to leave Adam, hence the Ants mark 1 were over and they formed Bow Wow Wow with Annabella, under Mcclaren's guidance.

Adam was NEVER a member of the Bromley Contingent. Can this be corrected please? Steveant (talk) 03:39, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia goes by the policy of verifiability not truth (see WP:V), so I've restored this information with a citation. --JD554 (talk) 14:14, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

Taken from this quote? "Being six years younger and not part of the Antpeople demographic, I had no idea that Adam had been so successful. His brand of slightly camp Englishness - principal boy rather than sex god - did not travel as successfully across the Atlantic as, say, Billy Idol (who, despite being part of the same Bromley contingent that hung around Sex, is conspicuously absent from these pages)."

Holly Johnson is incorrect. Billy Idol CAME from Bromley, Adam did not, he was born in North London and never even went to Bromley which is the other side of London! Just because someone said something in a book review (about someone that they admit they don't even know much about) doesn't make it correct. What is the point of wikipedia if it is based on verified "facts" and not the truth? Steveant (talk) 06:55, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Merge

I'm as big a fan as Adam's got, and I think this should be merged with Adam and the Ants--Johnny Spasm (talk) 22:33, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

A few things

One cannot help wondering whether Adam was hoping to have a repeat of the success enjoyed by Frankie Goes to Hollywood after their "Relax" and "Two Tribes" videos were also similarly banned by the BBC, no doubt helping both singles along to becoming roaring chart hits.

This is conjecture and not true. Adam had no idea why Strip the video was banned. But it did however cause him to not bother touring the UK.

In 1985, he still had enough appeal to secure a spot at the Live Aid concert, but rather than perform a crowd-pleasing set of old hits - as Queen did to revive their career - he presented songs from the latest album. His sales continued to decline.

Adam only performed ONE song- Vive le Rock, his latest single. He was asked by Geldof on the day to shorten his set because other acts had taken up too much time. He was planning on also playing Antmusic and Goody Two Shoes, but decided to play his latest hit. Famously Adam was the only artist who appeared at Live Aid who's album sales went down after Live Aid!

It would be interesting to reference this - it sounds vaguely plausible. But then again Nik Kershaw did a longer set at Live Aid, and quickly vanished into an even deeper oblivion. -Ashley Pomeroy (talk) 23:57, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

Cites, please

Well, folks -- one more Wikipedia article full of random statements without cites.
If it's not cited, there is no reason why anyone should believe that it's true.
Per Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons:

"We must get the article right. Be very firm about the use of high quality references. Unsourced or poorly sourced contentious material about living persons ... should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion"

Everything in a biographical article needs to be cited. -- 201.53.7.16 (talk) 15:44, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Appearance

The most striking thing about Adam Ant at the peak of his powers was his appearance, yet the article does not describe his penchant for bizarre makeup and pantomime costumes... can someone with more definite recollections oblige?

The Yowser (talk) 16:37, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

I give up!

I have been here and read this entry on Adam and the Ants a few times in the past and each time I am AMAZED at the silly errors and untrue facts written here. Again and again someone edits and adds something that is incorrect.

There is no mention that Malcolm McClaren led the Ants who made Dirk Wears White Sox off to form Bow Wow Wow, instead we are told that "It was felt that a new direction was needed"! Then we're told that Merrick went back to Dalek I Love You.

BOTH are wrong.

But I'll be damned if I'm going to keep coming back to re-edit and correct. Wiki is a waste of time, the idea that anyone can edit the page is ridiculous when they either don't know what they're talking about or don't even reference where they got their information from. I'm a HUGE long time fan, and though that doesn't mean I am 100% right or an authority on the band, I am pretty sure I know more facts about them and Adam having read TONS about them both throughout the years.

For proper facts about Adam and/or the Ants, go to some of the excellent fansites or the 'official' sites:

Grandfather, Walter Smith

I've removed the statement that Adam Ant's maternal grandfather, Walter Albany Smith, was a heavy drinker since I can find no mention of it in Adam Ant's autobiography. However, Ant does state that both his father and paternal grandfather were alcoholics, so I suspect this is where confusion arose. I've also corrected the statement that Ant threw a brick through the chapel window at primary school - he writes in his autobiography that it was the window of the headmistress's office. Jammycaketin (talk) 19:16, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

Bitten by Grace Jones

The article states that Grace Jones nipping Ant's cheek was edited out of the American version of the Honda Motor Scooter ad. Assuming that by "American" the author meant "US," this can't be entirely true - I saw the nipping version of the ad many times on Boston and Providence stations in the 1980s. Perhaps it was edited at first and then restored, or left in at first and edited out after negative feedback, but even that's a stretch - I don't recall ever seeing the ad WITHOUT the nip. 24.34.190.157 (talk) 16:19, 27 December 2009 (UTC)

D'oh. Maybe it was edited. The article says "ear," but I thought it was his cheek. Either I'm remembering it wrong or I'm remembering something completely different. I do remember her biting him in some way, though. 24.34.190.157 (talk) 16:22, 27 December 2009 (UTC)

Goody Two Shoes did not exist in 1981 in any way, shape or form!!!

Recently I had to delete for a SECOND time a mention of Goody Two Shoes having been recorded (or in this second case demoed) in 1981. A reference was provided for the full paragraph, but there was nothing in that reference to support this specific claim, hence the deletion. I have now found the same claim on the Goody Two Shoes (song) page with no reference whatsoever.

For what it's worth, Goody Two Shoes was written circa Feb/March 1982 after (1) the departure from the band of Gary Tibbs and Terry Lee Miall (although possibly before the decision to go fully solo) and (2) as the first of a new batch of songs to replace the set of songs which Adam and Marco had originally written for the putative next Ants album after Prince Charming and then scrapped (some of which MAY appear among the bonus tracks on the Friend Or Foe remaster, although this has never been confirmed.)

I shall monitor this regularly in future and shall delete any further references to Goody Two Shoes already existing in 1981 at it is just plain not true! (Unless anyone can find a proper reference to support such a claim.)

If you are 63.3.19.1 or any of the other people who have input said faleshood onto this page, please feel free to explain below from where the hell you got the idea of Goody Two Shoes existing in 1981 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.144.242.18 (talk) 10:49, 9 May 2010 (UTC)

2 edits made

Adam and the Ants split in early 1982 not late 81- AntRap was relased in dec 1981 and early copies of Goody Two Shoes had the name Adam and the Ants on the cover, copies with Adam Ant and Adam and the Ants exist.

The Ants left Adam in early 1980 to form Bow Wow Wow, not to join "Mclaren's other band" Bow Wow Wow.

SteveHorwood 14:06, 4 May 2006 (UTC)

OK, I am confused... I saw him live in... '84, I think. The club was a converted grocery store in San Antonio, Texas. They rocked the place with a solid extended 2 hour set, no break, plus an encore. When the crowd demanded a second encore, Adam told us a friend had stopped by to see the show and asked if we would mind if he sat in? Marco walked out, borrowed the new guy's guitar and he and Adam melted the walls (and most of the women in the house) with the most powerful rendition of "Sex" I have ever heard. So, exactly how broken up were they? --Bill W. Smith, Jr. 20:59, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

If this was 1984, what you would have seen was solo Adam with his live backing band (guitarist Cha Burns, bassist Chris Constantinou, drummers Bogdan Wiczling and Barry Watts, trumpeter Tony Hughes and saxists Steve Farr & Steve King), with Marco making a guest appearance. As you say yourself, Marco "borrowed the new guy's guitar" - the new guy being the late Cha Burns. Marco remained heavily involved in Adam's career on all his solo albums, he returned to Adam's band full-time in 1985 (including Live Aid) and in 1993-95 and Adam reportedly intends to include three songs he and Marco recently co-wrote on his new album. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.144.242.18 (talk) 11:20, 9 May 2010 (UTC)
Well, one ex-member guesting on one live song... not exactly "Marco, Merrick, Terry Lee, Gary Tibbs and yours truly" etc is it? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Totnesmartin (talkcontribs) 18:52, 22 December 2006 (UTC).

1996-2001

A short section should also be put in for this period at some point - his second marriage, parenthood, first attempt at own label (Blend), home studio & demos from this period (Call Me Sausage etc, the Blend Demos, America b/w Big Trouble), live appearances (Wannabe, Dweeb, Rachel Stamp) etc. Antbox material could be added/moved here. The biography would be a prime source but there should also be some material on the Internet Wayback Machine. 95.151.210.35 (talk) 19:18, 3 January 2011 (UTC)

Have done it up. Still needs more references. When I get the time I'll try searching the Internet Wayback Machine for Caroline "Ant Ranger"'s old GeoCities site and old editions of the Ant Lib website which will have useful refs from the period. 95.151.209.111 (talk) 01:25, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

"Since 2010" vs "Since the 2010s"

I thought I'd run out of summary space, so have quantified here:

  • "Since 2010" does indicate the beginning of a decade - since the decade of 2010, and ongoing, ie "Since 2010 Adam Ant has... etc."
  • "Since the 2010s" is an imprecise term - it implies that "2010s" is a specific date, whereas a starting point requires a specific point - ie 2010.

If you think that it really is a decade term, then it needs rewriting again, the previous wording is unacceptably vague.

a_man_alone (talk) 14:31, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

It said "Since the start of the 2010s" which is very precise, NOT just "Since the 2010s". It also had a wikilink to the page for the 2010s. 195.92.109.20 (talk) 14:58, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
Well, true, but isn't the start of the 2010's 2010? That's surely even more precise, isn't it? Personally I'm not sure how necessary it is to refer to a decade when we're only 18 months into it. Anyway, as you've probably noted I didn't truly revert the change, as I kept the link to the 2010's. a_man_alone (talk) 15:35, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
A compromise - I've moved the word "Since" into the linked text. It still reads the same but linking "Since 2010" to the 2010s makes more sense than just linking 2010 to the 2010s.95.144.247.178 (talk) 21:28, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

Simon Price

I GIVE UP TOO Why so many mentions of (insignificant) Simon Price in this wiki article? It seems like a blatant case of self-publication and plugging the man's silly club - a person who has NOTHING to do with Adam's career.

Terrible wiki page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 149.254.234.147 (talk) 17:43, 10 August 2011 (UTC)

Because Adam played a gig at Stay Beautiful and did an interview with Simon for The Quietus - the first major interview of his comeback in fact. And there's not that "many" mentions - just a couple for events that took place during April 2010.
This isn't "self-publication" - I'm not Simon Price, in fact he and I don't get on at all (he hates my guts actually) but his club and his interview WERE important in that Spring 2010 phase. He played his small part.
PS If he's so insignificant, why does he have his own wikipage?

2010s comeback sections

Monster Raving Loony Party Conference 25 September 2010

On 24 Oct 2010, ip address 95.144.246.140 added information about Adam Ant’s performance at the Conference which I think is not true, myself being there. He performed numbers with one young guitarist only, and one number with the band What’s Next. The videos from the event indicate this: http://www.youtube.com/user/TheJackSlipper#g/u I have changed the text accordingly.

Acabashi (talk) 14:58, 19 December 2010 (UTC)

Sub-section: Adam Ant is the Blueblack Hussar in 'Marrying the Gunner's Daughter' (2010)

This sub-section is a mess. The text starts with reference to the header and quickly turns into ‘What Ant Did Next’, reading as a fanzine. Editors appear to have tagged stuff onto the bottom without any regard to the header, to encyclopedic style, or Wikipedia guidelines on Conflict of Interest and Neutral Point of View. Subsequent information added to the subject of this sub-section should be split and added under another sub-header. However the problem will still remain: trivia and minutiae updates abound, and have often been taken from promotional web sites and forums, including Ant’s own, with text directly copied and pasted - such copying will at least contravene copyright. If these additions are at all important, and that is doubtful, they should be removed and replaced with précis, and citation to independent third party sources.

One example is the para beginning: On Thursday 21 October Ant performed at the Union Chapel, London. - text begun by IP address 77.102.151.115 on 22 Oct 2010. Subsequently it had two references attached, being a frequently updated forum, thereby for Wikipedia, unviable, and Ant's web site home page: both of these give none of the 'information' implied. I shall attempt a clean-up of this section at some point, but have removed these two eroneous references, (previously 42 and 43), as a start, making the paragraph what it now is, lacking in viable reference and contravening Wikipedia:No original research, which of course is what it was before.

I welcome observations about this section, and the whole article, from experienced Wikipedia editors; ie those those with well-developed active User Pages, not anonymous IP addresses.

Acabashi (talk) 17:17, 19 December 2010 (UTC)

Firstly, with all due respect, whether you 'welcome' comment from any particular type of commentator or not is frankly neither here nor there.
I agree that the section is a mess, but unfortunately this is reflective of the reality of the situation - i.e. the artist, after several years of mostly inactivity suddenly entering into a mental illness-fuelled (bipolar at hypermanic/full manic phase) period of intense musical activity. In 2007, the Bloomsbury concert was an Event. In 2010, "Events" are hapenning on a weekly - almost daily - basis. I think it will only be possible to precis this period once it comes to a recognisable end. Adam's sectioning in May/June 2010 did appear to be such an end at the time, but things have carried on. Given that this project has survived such a period of confinement for Ant, it seems highly likely now that it will eventually reach some sort of physical product (ie the album) will emerge sooner or later. Until then, as this chapter of Adam's career continues to take twists and turns, it will probably be impossible to maintain a satisfactory version of this section as more and more increasingly high-profile details will inevitably be added.
Eventually, however, I would propose that once this whole era of Ant's career has come to a recognisable end, the section gets split into three - one part for the initial batch of concerts in Spring 2010, a second for the late 2010 World Tour of London and a third for the album itself next year. Only by that time will it be feasible to sift through the history for significant and insignificant events. The first couple of pub-level guerilla gigs seemed major at the time - then the 30th April gig, the first pre-ticketed and pre-publicised event at a major venue. There have now been several of these and it's still hard to determine which are the significant ones.
There is a school of thought among Antfandom that it is inappropriate to thus document what are essentially symptoms of a extended bout of mental illness. While I have some sympathy with this view, I feel in the light of the aforementioned likelihood of an album emerging, this approach will ultimately prove non viable. Therefore the section has to stay and simple deletion is not an option.
No copyright message exists on adam-ant.net as far as I can see. In its small print, it describes itself not as an Official Site or promotional site but as 'an officially approved site' which just about sums it up - it is a long-running fansite. Family of Noise and Ant Lib (www.adamandtheants.org) are simply out-and-out independent fan sites. As far as I can see, Wikipedia's issue with forums is related simply to material which is inaccessible due to being password-protected - the FoN forum is accessible without password/login so this is not an issue.
I should also like to say that it is a bit cheeky, to say the least, to accuse a section of being 'original research' when you deleted the references, even if possibly with justification.
195.92.109.20 (talk) 15:30, 21 December 2010 (UTC)
Regarding the Family Of Noise site, this is due to close on 1 February 2011. I have pre-emptively made archive copies of the two referenced pages which can serve as replacement ref links. 95.144.241.162 (talk) 23:08, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
Following on from the above point about Adam-Ant.net not being a promotional or official website, the Union chapel reference has been re-input (at the point up to which it covers all information - the date, location and title of the concert) with a hash to direct the link to the relevant section of the page. I would however acknowledge the need for another reference to cover the remaining details about the gig (musicians, content of gig).

One possible longterm solution - once the Hussar album gets a release, it will require a Wikipedia entry of its own. Much of this material can then be moved to the page for the album - perhaps as a "background to release" section. 95.144.247.76 (talk) 00:08, 23 December 2010 (UTC)
I don't think we can wait that long, to be quite frank. The album will probably be released in the summer, by that time the section will be far too long winded. The piece surrounding the Black Hussar album needs to be cleaned up now. Leinsatiableone (talk) 12:52, 2 January 2011 (UTC)
Okay, I've split the section into two for the time being. We can revive the Blueblack Hussar section title when the release is more imminent. For what it's worth, current reports say the album should be due in the Spring, not the summer, but time will tell. Both sections can be still be moved to the page for the new album once it becomes tangible enough to need a page of its own.95.144.244.152 (talk) 20:31, 2 January 2011 (UTC)
Great to see all of that split up into appropriate sections. However, it still needs to be cleaned up. It looks ever so long and messy. If you are to edit it all up, the best bet is for you to save everything (beforehand) to a Word document, so when the album page is created you can paste the lot into the "background to release" section. Leinsatiableone (talk) 03:04, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
A further split - two paragraphs of interview material regarding the ...Blueblack Hussar... album and Gun In My Pocket b/w Who's A Goofy Bunny? single have been given their own section - the start of the above-proposed revival of the Blueblack Hussar section title. 95.151.210.35 (talk) 19:09, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
A new section has now been set up for events from Feb 2011 onwards, particularly the upcoming UK Tour. New developments not directly relating to the making or release of the Marrying The Gunner's Daughter album should be added to this new section until further notice. From now on, please only edit the World Tour Of London section in order to add/amend details pertaining to that particular period (June 2010-Jan 2011). Thank You 195.92.109.20 (talk) 13:58, 30 March 2011 (UTC)
With a second UK tour now announced for Nov-Dec 2011, I have input another section break. All events from Aug 2011 onwards are to go into that new UK Tour Second Leg section. Any developments up to the end of July 2011 (such as further solo gigs, review quotes etc) can go in the First Leg section. If, as anticipated, the Jamie Reynolds documentary comes out during the later months of this year, then the paragraph can be moved from the First Leg section to the Second Leg section along with any new relevant info, but for now it can stay put. However, when the time comes I may incorporate this into the section title.
I have heard reports that the Nov/Dec '11 tour will be the Marrying The Gunners Daughter tour and feture the new album songs, but until there is a verifiable source for this, we should still to the First Leg and Second Leg headers. However, if it is indeed the new album tour and if the album itself soon follows, then eventually in 2012 we could look at merging the two section as a single Marrying The Gunner's Daughter section. We'll just have to wait and see how things play out... 95.151.210.76 (talk) 11:22, 16 July 2011 (UTC)
P.S. Okay so I broke my own rules, I said end of July, but the 31 July Vintage Festival fits in better with all the August-December gigs, especially as it was announced fairly recently whereas Guilfest and Lattitude were announced back in the Spring at about the same time as the National & Seaside tours and Hyde Park. 95.144.247.200 (talk) 15:25, 7 August 2011 (UTC)
The second leg of the tour is complete and I posted an update yesterday. I've started a new section for the US Tour next year and I've incorporated the Jan 2012 warm-up gigs into the initial stub-text.
Any smaller gigs Adam does in the intervening time can go on the end of the old section (UK tour 2nd leg). I seem to remember reading a report on Antrap or Adam-Ant.net about an acoustic gig planned for this week at an already sold-out charity event, but the report seems to have vanished. However, if it resurfaces and/or if any more small gigs come through, then they go on the end of the old section.
I've also created a new subsection for the Blueblack Hussar documentary and moved one paragraph out from the UK tour first leg section to fill out the docu section. This, along with the new album section and the Fashion Label section have been put under a meta section of Upcoming Projects - separate from the biography. In time, if all of Adam's (admittedly manic) plans work out, they can be moved to the Biograph and other future plans can take their place, such as the planned Adam and the Ants reunion for 2013 with just Kevin Mooney and Terry Lee Miall, or various political campaigning relating to mental health rights issues - both of which Adam has so far only vaguely talked of in a couple of interviews and are both some way over the horizon.
One other point. Both 2011 UK tour legs have attracted a fair amount of 'insider' gossip about comings and goings backstage, much of which reflects rather less well on Adam than they overwhelmingly positive fan and critic response to the actual concerts. If a reliable source ever one day surfaces for these stories (say, a tell-all book or magazine/newspaper feature) then such material can be incorporated. Until such time, such rumours CANNOT be incorporated into the article and would constitute a serious WP:BLP issue if they were. If that means that some people feel the UK tour sections have an excessively positive tone to them, then so be it. I've done my best to maintain WP:NPOV, but only the good stuff can be verified. 95.144.243.30 (talk) 17:12, 18 December 2011 (UTC)
The US tour has been postponed until September. The section break will remain in place, but the new US Tour section will be renamed once a more suitable name offers itself (cynics are not welcome!). It all depends on what Adam has planned for the eight months in between. 95.144.242.18 (talk) 23:07, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
Well, we've now got the photo exhibition and the trip Down Under, so I've renamed the section in hounour of these two events. 86.163.58.67 (talk) 00:36, 3 February 2012 (UTC)

Sections 1.10-1.12 (Overhaul)

These sections read very much like an essential read for die hard fanatics. There is way too much information provided. It should read as a more coherent piece of work. At the moment, there is no flow. It is a jumble.

It would appreicated if these sections are cleaned up to make for easy reading. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Leinsatiableone (talkcontribs) 11:09, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

See above major discussion for why these sections are organised the way they are. It has already been agreed - in a discussion which *you* participated in - that this period should be in separate sections.
Also, there is no such thing as "too much information" - may I direct you to Notability guidelines do not directly limit article content (Wikipedia:N#NCONTENT), 195.92.109.20 (talk) 16:49, 7 April 2011 (UTC)

Serious editing needed

I don't know enough about the subject to do a proper job, but if somebody with better knowledge of mr. Ant could take a pair of scissors to this article, I'd be delighted. Especially the 2010/2012 sections are bloated with irrelevant trivia and non-events. Who wrote that stuff? His agent? I can't imagine that's all got encyclopedic relevance. Thanks. 94.64.192.246 (talk) 23:44, 31 May 2012 (UTC)

Again, see Notability guidelines do not directly limit article content (Wikipedia:N#NCONTENT) and Wikipedia is not a paper encyclopedia WP:NOTPAPER.
As far as Wikipedia is concerned, there is no such thing as "too much information". There is no policy grounds for any such removing of material and section blanking will be - quite properly - treated as vandalism and responded to accordingly.
And no, I'm not Adam's agent(s) - in fact I've had to tidy up in the past after they've made messes on here! 81.157.83.117 (talk) 15:56, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

Section headers

Are terrible and limiting. Why is the acting section limited to those dates....so....everything he did before that is nonexistant like Jubilee (1978 film)?--Amadscientist (talk) 11:10, 8 March 2013 (UTC)

General article clean up, copy edit and trimming

I am beginning a clean up effort on the article to improve it quality and encyclopedic value.--Amadscientist (talk) 08:29, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

I have discovered and removed a copyright violation from the article. If other editors would like to take some time to review the text verses the references, that might be a good idea. I will return to this later today or tomorrow.--Amadscientist (talk) 09:21, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

Splitting article at solo career and creating a smaller summary

I will be splitting the solo section to Solo career of Adam Ant and adding a smaller summary (shortend but not short) in a similar manner to Solo career of Paul McCartney.--Amadscientist (talk) 00:25, 12 March 2013 (UTC)

Improving basing on FA article of similar figure

We could use the FA article Paul McCartney as a bases to improve heading and title issues.--Amadscientist (talk) 00:55, 12 March 2013 (UTC)

Moved from mainspace for discussion

The "Upcoming projects" section is promotional and not approtpriate for a Wikipedia article. I am moving it to the talkpage to discuss or trim whatever can be rescued.

Amadscientist (talk) 09:36, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

This section is certainly not intended to be promotional - indeed, I originally input it in order to deter promotional people from inputting such material, by providing a more encyclopedic alternative. (I think there may be something about this either further up the talkpage or else on edi history notes). The general plan is that sections should be moved into the main career history as projects are realised. This has already been done for the new album and the same will be done for the documentary, fashion label, other artists on BBH Records etc as these works materialise and then move into the realm of the past. Other new projects can then be added, notably the follow-up album Ant has discussed in at least two print interviews in the last couple of months.
If you feel that there are issues with the style and presentation of this section, please feel free to reword it and I will be happy to work with you on this. However I do not recommend either binning the section or merging it into the main article. In the former case, important recent developments have nowhere to go. In the latter case, considerable restructuring work would have to be carried out every time something gets postponed a bit longer (a highly likely problem as the history of the new album shows.) 195.92.109.20 (talk) 12:59, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
As an example of the potential usefulness of this section: There are a number of former Blueblack Hussar Records artists - Dressing For Pleasure, The Feathers (ex-Poussez Posse mk1), Carnation Twink (ex-Twinkle Twinkle/Krakatoa) to name but three - on the live circuit with axes to grind against Ant and his label. Should they start to get music press attention, it is certain they will give vent to their gripes against their former boss (indeed the Feathers have a song on the subject, "Dear Leader".) The resulting controversy would be noteworthy of mention in the article The subsection on "Blueblack Hussar Records - Other Artists" in the Upcoming Projects section would be a sensible place to put this when it happens. As a potential controversy surrounding the label, it would also hardly constitute "promotional material", would it? 195.92.109.20 (talk) 14:21, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
There may be content worth saving but not in this form. This isn't a promotional article and upcoming prjects have little to no encyclopedic value.--Amadscientist (talk) 18:33, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
I see. Well, when these projects come to fruition in the coming months I shall restore them to the main page.
In the meantime, perhaps you might like to restore some of those section headers. Right now there is an Ants section and then a giant 28 year Solo section before the present era. It's frankly a pig's ear. Please sort it out. 195.92.109.20 (talk) 18:52, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
The article has an excesive amount of headers and could use some subheadings in the solo career section. Why is having a 28 year solo career (something anyone would be proud to have) and the Adam and the Ants section before the present era important? "Present" is always last in chronological order of articles. The heading should not be so date specific and the article itself is too big. Some of the content moved here may have value but the heading is not appropriate and could be seen as promotional and not encyclopedic. This is a biography of a living person. We don't need to add a header, titled "Biography" and certainly not twice. The article deserves a split of some content into their own articles with links. The figure has a career that spands a great length of time and the body of his work is great enough to be split, organised and combined on a possible template or navigation bar. One long article takes too long to load, is to detailed to read and is a diservice to the figure when other similar pages load faster, are easier to read and have the formal structures put in place to rate the article at least a B rating.
We need to try to work together and not just revert each other. What are you thoughts on the above?--Amadscientist (talk) 00:12, 12 March 2013 (UTC)
I agree about the working together, no question
The trouble is that you seem to have simply removed all the subheaders down to a certain point to create one big long section. This is far more unreadable and clumsy than several shorter sections.
Also there are various other issues which you have left in place on the article which I have mentioned in my report to the Administrators' Noticeboard. It simply will not do to leave the article pro-tem in a muddled chaos with (for example) interview quotes from Ant's then manager regarding the state of his recording career circa 2000 in the Personal Life section and a section referring to Ant as Goddard inconsistent with the rest of the article.
Even if I myself do not revert these things, I can guarantee you another editor will come along and demand the reintroduction of subsections.
I strongly suggest you have a look through my proposals in edit 54346569.
Incidentally, that second "Biography" actually referred to the publication of Ant's autobiog! I did actually correct that in my edits today. 95.144.236.108 (talk) 01:07, 12 March 2013 (UTC)
Upcoming projects

New section about deletion of BLP concern

Extended content

"His present comeback agenda continues and thrives amidst concerns expressed by friends and long term fans alike about such activities being merely another symptom of the mental health issues which were considered largely responsible for his lengthy spell of near-inactivity spanning the late 1990s and 2000s."

@ Amadscientist - I see you have deleted this as unencyclopedic and a potential BLP issue. Unfortunately there is a need for *some* form of comment along these lines. It is generally recognised among fans and old friends of Ant that his comeback in the 2010s - album, UK & US tours and all - is essentially a symptom of an extended manic episode ressurgent since he quit medication. In particular Marco Pirroni has been highly outspoken on this issue. Bearing this in mind, the validity of the 2010s comeback has become the subject of a considerable fan war. To take a briskly positive attitude to the comeback is therefore to open oneself to accusations - screaming accusations - of POV.

Considering that you deleted the Upcoming projects as "promotional", it might be well to consider that an article which takes an unduly positive attitude to the comeback without counterbalance could open itself to accusations not only of POV but indeed of being promotional propaganda in support of the official line of Ant and his management. The statement in the title of this section was originally input in order to lend counterbalance and context to the article. At the very least it acknowledges the controversy.

Please consider these points. 23:37, 12 March 2013 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.144.240.107 (talk)

It is a BLP concern for the article to use Wikipedia as the voice of authority in the narative like this. If there are specific quotes fromm specific indivual's that are reliably sourced to multple RS (as all BLP contrentious claims require) then should be included. There is no attempt make this either positive, negative or innacurate. The article has many issue needing to be addressed by things have to be followed and BLP issues should then be thrown back up on a header title in the talkpage to make some point.
Look, I have been researching the figure for a bit now and there really is a lot missing. Some things may need some work, for example the musical style section could have a review or rections section and we could bring back some of the praise that was removed but it will also be balanced with the other reviews that were not positive. Also in that same section we might go into some detail about the look or style of the clothes and costumes used. I found an interesting fact about the Hussar jacket that the official web page seems to mention as well about having been the jacket worn by David Hemming in the 1968 film Charge of the Light Brigade". I also theink the Adam and the Ants section needs expanding but not so much about bring content from the main article but bring in some information that has encyclopedic value. I think we also need a better image of Adam and the Ants then the one we have which I think is the reformed band, not the original. Anyone know for sure? I think that is after Bow Wow Wow.--Amadscientist (talk) 02:10, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
Reformed band? There is no reformed Adam and the Ants and it's highly unlikely there ever will be one.
That group photo was of the 1981 lineup and was taken for the Prince Charming album promotion.
Ant's current band is The Good The Mad And The Lovely Posse, if that's what you mean by "reformed band." None of them (except Adam) was ever in Adam and the Ants and several of them weren't even born during the Ants' lifetime (1977-82)195.92.109.20 (talk) 10:48, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
Why do I get the feeling you are a little closer to the subject than is comfortable for COI? Adam...is that you? Be honest here...I am not someone who is unfamiliar with the subject.--Amadscientist (talk) 04:44, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
I'm a fan. My name is David and I look like this! Judging by the anti-internet track "Bullshit" on his new album, I seriously doubt Adam will be editing Wikipedia any time soon. LOL 195.92.109.20 (talk) 12:19, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
You could use some sun. LOL! Yes, I was a fan back in the day. I was a little concerned because you seem to be of a similar opinion in a very similar manner. I trust your good faith. As for reforming the band, I think it is clear that once everyone but Marco P. left, the band had to be reformed. Adam Ant formed a number of back up bands after going solo and they don't count as the main group Adam and the Ants.--Amadscientist (talk) 19:14, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
It was taken at a fan convention, it's meant to be this look.
Live backup bands 1982-1995 had no name, sometimes fans and journalists would casually call them the Ants. On one live bootleg from late '82, Adam introduces the big 7-piece backing band as "new Ants", on another from the same tour he calls them "The Men". The Vive Le Rock lineup of Ant/Marco/Wizcling/De Niro was the nearest to being a proper band as such, they appeared on the LP back sleeve and even had a track about the four of them (Scorpio Rising). In the 2010s, Adam's new band in Spring 2010 were called the Pirate Metal Extravaganza (also the name of the 30th April 2010 gig) which became the Good, The Mad And The Lovely that autumn. When Ant switched bands at the start of 2011, he kept the new name but added Posse on to make it The Good The Mad And The Lovely Posse which is what he's got at the moment. 00:59, 19 March 2013 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.144.237.53 (talk)

Personal Life

This is the first such bio I've read on Wikipedia in which there is no hint whatsoever of a personal life. Is he married, single, divorced? Is he gay, bi, straight? Any kids? There's nothing there! I'm done

I created the articles for Deutscher Girls, Zerox (song), Cartrouble, Kings of the Wild Frontier (Adam and the Ants song), Dog Eat Dog (Adam and the Ants song), Friends (Adam and the Ants song), Friend or Foe (Adam Ant song), Desperate But Not Serious (song) & Room at the Top (song). I think I'm done.--Johnny Spasm (talk) 10:04, 10 March 2015 (UTC)

Proposed merge with Adam Ant's musical career

To put it bluntly, I'm not sure why this would be a separate article from the main biography of Adam Ant, particularly in light of the fact that there's a tag on the musical career article that it's too intricate (maybe best to include a longer summary in this article?). I see deletion as a last resort, so I'll try and start a discussion about merger instead. I dream of horses (T) @ 06:11, 20 May 2014 (UTC)

This article is far too long as it is. Merging should never be proposed when it would make the article even worse. Center more on clean up and not adding more. That section was split off because it was so large and a summary was added to the main article.--Mark Miller (talk) 06:20, 20 May 2014 (UTC)
I thought the article was just fine as it was before user Amadscientist came along and divided it into two separate articles. I think if it is going to stay as two articles, he should be contacted and made to finish off his package of improvements he was working on rather than leaving the two pages in their half-finished state like a couple of abandoned building sites. So could someone please kindly fetch user Amadscientist and MAKE him finish what he started on. 62.190.154.115 (talk) 16:54, 13 June 2014 (UTC)
I propose the article should be renamed "Adam Ant's solo musical career" and that a new article should be created on "Adam Ant's acting career". These two articles plus the Adam and the Ants article can then, all three, form a series of articles and be used as Main Article redirects from sections of the primary Adam Ant article. 2.29.250.248 (talk) 11:30, 12 July 2014 (UTC)
Have one article dedicated to Adam Ant the man and another article dedicated to Adam and the Ants (i.e. Marilyn Manson and Marilyn Manson (band)).--Soul Crusher (talk) 06:42, 3 January 2015 (UTC)
Merge what can be neatly merged into the main article, and merge everything else into articles about his albums (e.g. in a Background section). FamblyCat94 (talk) 08:03, 28 August 2016 (UTC)

Origin of 'Adam Ant'

This fact is in dispute:

His name allegedly comes from the 1960s BBC television series Adam Adamant Lives! [1].

It's often repeated by reliable sources such as the BBC, but considered incorrect by many fans. I am trying to find a reliable source indicating it's not rue. Any/all input (pro or con) would be appreciated.Econrad 14:09, 3 May 2006 (UTC)

Hi, have looked around everywhere, Adam has said on many occasions in interviews that the Name Adam he took because it was the first man and he liked it, and The Ants came from a friend who said one night whilst looking down at a lot of people, "Look at the ants". Also Ants were hard working and he wanted a name like The Beatles.
A quote:
James Maw Official Adam Ant Story 1981:
Four – The girl in the shop
Throughout Art School, Adam’s socialising had been at best, fitful.
At times he’d be genuinely one of the lads, going down to the pub,
having a laugh, and at other times he’d be almost a recluse, talking
to no one, totally absorbed in his work. It was soon after he had
left Art School when no one had seen him for weeks that he phoned
Lester Square out of the blue. “Hey Lester, I want to start a group
called The Ants.”
And that’s how it happened. (The name had been inspired by an
incident one night when Adam and a friend of his, known as “Our
Kid” were on top of a Multi-Storey Car Park. The Kid looked down
at the people below and said “Look at the Ants!”
The Adam Adamant character name is just a coincidence.

This is far more reliable than the BBC site or any other site.
The BBC have used that Adam Adamant thing becuase of probably bad research, someone saw it on a a website or :something and thought it was fact, it's not. They can be wrong too about things.

From: http://www.adam-ant.net/biography.html (Adam's official site):
The Name Change to 'ADAM ANT'
After experimenting with various names, Stuart finally settled on Adam because he'd seen paintings of the Garden of Eden and thought it would be a nice place to be. He decided on The Ants as insect names like the Beatles did well.
I plan on updating the main article shortly, and mention the issue in more detail (and mention 'Adamant Lives! ' is a popular theory that has been denied by Adam). Econrad 00:25, 6 May 2006 (UTC)
I had always assumed it was a play on words on the 60's cartoon character/superhero "Atom Ant". Remenber? "Up and at 'em, Atom Ant!" :) --Bill W. Smith, Jr. 20:49, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

I thought it was derived from the Adamant brand of old fashioned urinals, see http://www.nothingtoseehere.net/2009/10/victorian_toilets_rothesay.html As they have now nearly all been demolished or modernised, he would have to give a different explaination as no young people would have seen any and would not understand the punk-style joke. I only just realised the apparent play on the word adamant. The alleged quote "they are resilient little buggers" (I couldn't find anything like a RS to verify this quotation, though) would support this. --Florian Blaschke (talk) 01:07, 28 November 2016 (UTC)

The name

Hej,
so, do I get this correctly that Adam Ant is his "real" name since the change, not just a "stage name" ? I wonder if this then should explicitly be made clear in the article (even more). I am not a fan closely following Ant's career and life, so I only got convinced it probably is his real name when re-reading the intro section, which would otherwise probably go "real name, better known by stage name".
Not everywhere can you legally change names as easily as maybe in the UK, or Sweden, so this possibility may not be obvious to us.
related(ly?) - If Adam Ant is the "real" name, should then for times after the name change this name be used, and no more Goddard ? (only one appearance in the personal life section).
well, then … Pardon my German (Fiiiisch!) (talk) 16:27, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

He has not had the name legally changed, but he uses the name "Adam" rather than "Stuart" even in his personal life. His mother is the only person in his life who still calls him "Stuart" 62.190.154.115 (talk) 16:59, 13 June 2014 (UTC)

Some speculate that Stuart Goddard may have been indirectly influenced by the cartoon character Atom Ant. --RWBronco 17:49, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

I think it was more than an indirect influence. Pretty much everyone in the West has known about Atom Ant since the mid 1960s. I've seen this before. You instinctively know that you can't just say "Adam Ant based his name on Atom Ant". So you dress it up a bit, by saying that "some speculate that" etc, or "many people argue that". It's a way of giving unreferenced facts a veneer of respectability. As for the comment by 24.5.210.153, it's either incredibly wrong-headed or a very clever parody of the stereotypical insular North American mindset. It raises the question as to how many British people 24.5.210.153 knows, and how 24.5.210.153 can speak for "pretty much everyone in the West". -Ashley Pomeroy (talk) 23:57, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

I distinctly remember him saying in an interview in the 70s that he came up with the name while having a pee in a public lavatory. "Adamant" was the name of the company that made the urinal. There must be some record of the interview somewhere. However he gives a different explanation here: "I've always liked ants, because there was another group a few years back ... They're small, they're tough, they stick together and they're s'posed to be intelligent." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEYjeD5cIy8Willemslie (talk) 11:21, 28 October 2019 (UTC)

[1]Oh, very good! :-D

Too Loaded with Filler

I guess only with a musical artist who had a very short charting career would you find EACH GIG of his being reviewed in full detail, with each recent year getting it's own section and multiple paragraphs. All about road gigs. This minutiae should be on a fan's blog, not Wikipedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by YingYang2 (talkcontribs) 09:04, 13 April 2016 (UTC)

  1. ^ How shockingly plausible. He must get really pissed off about the urinal stories. Martinevans123 (talk) 11:35, 28 October 2019 (UTC)
