Afro-Spanish
editIm surprised there is no article about this already, well anyway if there isnt: Kudos to the author.Questionable pulse (talk) 18:53, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
The article says Afro-Spanish (Spanish: afroespañoles). I guess that could be a translation to Spanish but the word "afroespañol" is not used in Spain.
African people are today quite numerous in Spain: about half of them are white from nord-Africa (Morocco and Algeria mainly), they are called in Spanish "magrebís" and half of them are black that are called in Spanish "subsaharianos". (See Wikipedia articles for Maghreb and Sub-Saharan Africa).
Black people are called "negros" (not derogative in Spanish); there are numerous black people not African (Cuba, Santo Domingo). For all that reasons the word "africano" for origin of people does not means "black" but ("white" or "black") born in Africa and "negro" can be African origin or not.
These words are mainly used to refer immigrant groups; racial references to national Spanish are not common (in any case not like in the USA) and are forbiden for offical registry. I never heard them refering to groups of Spaniards.
These rare references will not confuse African with black, for example “un español de origen africano” (a Spaniard of African origin, may be white or black) “un español negro” (a black Spaniard, African origin or not).
I would recommend to avoid the reference to Spanish, because this articule represent rather a US ideological racial view, at least that there is evendence that the term "afroespañol" is used in the Spanish spoken in USA to refer the situation in Spain. 109.232.208.11 (talk) 09:57, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
There is not such term as Afro-Spaniard in Spain, because these people are not Spaniards, Spain is not the U.S.A., these people are called africans, blacks or sub-saharians, none in a derogatory way — Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.152.153.199 (talk) 03:47, 3 December 2018 (UTC)
Defining Afro-Spaniards
editI have attempted to circumscribe Afro-Spaniards in the lead although providing an exact number is impossible. It certainly cannot refer to all residents of Spain born in African countries. That is a poor definition. Maghrebis are not referred to or considered Afro-Spaniards in Spain. Huasteca (talk) 08:25, 29 March 2021 (UTC)
