Arminus AS

edit

The section on this is pretty involved and pointless imo. I have difficulty finding it on google, and no references are given. Given how old this page is I removed it from the article, until someone can do a better job reorganizing it.

On August 16, 2008, Arminius AS, sold 400,000 shares in Funcom N.V. at NOK 17.2824 per share. Arminius AS, is wholly owned by Mr. Trond Aas, the CEO and Managing Director of Funcom N.V. Arminius AS sells the shares in Funcom primarily to cover Mr. Aas’ acquisition costs of the shares as well as accumulated wealth tax costs of the past six years as a result of the holdings in Funcom. Mr. Aas and Arminius AS have over the course of those 6 years not sold any shares in the Company. The sale represents 18.7% of his outstanding shares and exercisable options.

Kampin Karl

More information on this paragraph is needed, otherwise I think it is not important:

On March 30, 2008, Kampin Karl the leader of a large in-game revolution which forced the developers to make major changes to the game.

Disk Space

edit

HEY GUYS, i don't think it really needs 30Gb, the original page said 3 but i cannot find my username/pass, and cannot verify if the requirements are even out yet, can some1 pls find out and if so, change it. Yes, it needs nearby 30GB after the Installation 1 Month ago, it needs 23 GB. But some new content patches are out since 1 Month.

I signed on to beta test AoC. I have a machine that will run Crysis with no problem on the lower settings and some jerkiness and lagging on the middle video settings. I quickly discovered I cannot play AoC at all. The MININUM specs to play this game are very high. And yes, when I finished the 12 gigabyte download and unzipped everything, the game now takes up 24 gigabytes of space on the hard drive. And since you need about 2 gigs of free space for your computer to run programs like this game without crashing or running into virtual memory problems, you do need 26 gigs of free space to install it. So the origianl 12 gig download plus 26 gigs of free space = 38 gigabytes of space you need to devote to this game to download and install it. My brother has dual 2.6 processors, 1 gigabyte of RAM, a NVidia GeForce 8600 GT, and the game runs choppy for him. It's in beta so some of that is expected. But this is a very high end game and soon all the jokes that were made about Crysis will likely shift to AoC. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.240.220.46 (talk) 15:48, 3 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

The download is over 12 GB in size for the early start, also we may want to add the early start is going to be on the 17th for pree-orders. A lot of optimizaion has happend in the end of the stress test beta (ended this week) so systems will be able to run it a lot better. My opinion was that the game had a lot of spots where it waited for server info as part of its render thus making the client draw the screen slower then would be normal for graphics of this type. 209.20.239.75 (talk) 21:56, 12 May 2008 (UTC)Paul BrinkerReply

The consensus in game on the first day after early access launch was that it ran considerably better than it did in Beta. I wasn't on beta so this is a subjective comment but many people comments were along the lines of "oh this is better!") Yarral (talk) 10:46, 19 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm installing it now and it says it needs 32Gibibytes. However, I notice it doesn't seem very efficient. I just watched it install the Intro movie for English, Spanish, AND French, and who knows what else it did when I wasn't watching the progress bar. Just my thoughts on it, I doubt they'll fix this, but it does seem to install more than what's needed...and takes forever. -feelie75 00:11 6/16/2008 (PST)

I'm pretty sure it says it needs 32 GB or 32 gigabytes. "gibi" is seldom used in the real world outside Wikipedia. CapnZapp (talk) 10:59, 17 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Guilds?

edit

Should the guild information be included? These seem to be player-run without anything to distinguish them from others which must exist. This will become especially problematic later, once the player base starts expanding. 206.45.164.115 03:31, 3 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

When more information is released about guilds and player cities, yes, guild information should be included. At the moment, the specific guild information is scanty. Another problem is that the information is always changing with each development update. Hopefully, once the game is closer to launch, we can add more information to the article which is both in-depth and accurate. -- Flask 17:18, 6 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

The pre-beta guild listing is relevant as this game IS VERY guild oriented, with a major portion of the endgame content slanted toward GvG sieges, and city building.

The Clans [guilds] that are most prevelant both reflect a cross section of the community as it is currently, have been a MAJOR factor as to assisting dev request for lore and balancing input, and are now contributing to the beging of the second phase of beta (Technical Beta, after Friends and Family beta, and before Gameplay Beta, as stated by the devs).

Certainly this is be information that will need to be updated as time goes on, but the information listed specifically stayed away from too many specifics (and thus would be out of date more quickly) while giving a general feel for the types of people you will meet on the AoC forums RIGHT NOW, and therefore is very relevant.

Texas?

edit

Why exactly is this an article on Texas?--SidiLemine 13:19, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

A bot added that tag, presumably because Robert E. Howard, the author of the Conan books was from Texas. It's a tenuous link though, so I've removed it. --Mako 22:06, 28 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Collision detection

edit

I removed collision detection again, because it *is* too obvious. If a game doesn't have collision detection, you would just fall through the world, without being stopped by the ground, walls, or other obstacles. I'm sure that games like World of Warcraft and Starwars Galaxies have collision detection.

Unless there's something really special about their collision detection, it shouldn't be in there, and there would be something special, please descibe what's so special about it. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 195.110.28.247 (talk) 20:02, 5 March 2007 (UTC).Reply

Neither Star Wars Galaxies nor World of Warcraft feature Age of Conan's particular type of collision detection on players or NPCs. In those other games, you can walk right through ("clip through") the bodies of other players without colliding... much like a ghost. Many contemporary MMOs do not feature collision detection on player bodies (or on weapons) which is why it is quite significant to note. When Age of Conan is released, you will understand just how important this extra "collision detection" is... especially in battles. You won't be able to "clip through" players who surround or block you. Indeed, group formations in battle will be able to "hem in" and "block" players from fleeing or advancing. You'll have to stand and fight. You will not be able to just "clip through" ("pass through") another enemy's body and run away, ala World of Warcraft. -- Flask 16:57, 6 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Their colision detection looks more like the one used in City Of Heroes\Villains. Where you do bump on enemies and friends alike Samuel Sol 16:53, 9 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
And now having played the game, the collision detection is not that great. I think it uses 'true' collision detection for all surfaces, which of course means you can swim under the land, when you fall through. Another problem is getting stuck behind trees and so on, despite the fact that the gaps are so big that you should have been able to walk through. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Buckethed (talkcontribs) 03:32, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Facts?

edit

Whats with the "Facts" section, this is a poor way to word an encyclopedic article and even feels a little pretentious. Nothing is ever "fact", especially with a game that is yet to be released and could change at any moment. I'm going to change this to "features", far more appropriate and conventional for a game article. Mloren 01:39, 10 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Multiplayer clarification

edit

Is the multiplayer for this game only for online, or is it also offline?

Age of Conan will have both singleplayer and multiplayer compatibilities. The first part of the game is focused mainly on singleplayer, although it is possible to group up with other people once you have reached the city of Tortage. But you can go to the inn to "sleep" which switches the game to nighttime; nighttime = singleplayer. Once you're level 20, you venture out of Tortage into a bigger world and I'm not sure if you can do singleplayer out of Tortage. By the way, it is stated that the singleplayer portion takes about 10 hours, more or less depending on time and commitment. .K 02:39, 9 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Oh, just read your question again; the game's singleplayer and multiplayer portion can only be played online .K 07:59, 9 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'm pretty sure all portions of this game can only played online, as that's proved to be such an effective way to get money from users in a world of torrents. 85.227.226.235 (talk) 23:51, 10 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

The main article makes it sound a little like you could play the game as a single player game when in fact it's really that there are some elements at the start of the game that you do in a single player mode. But anyone buying this thinking that as a whole it is in any way a single player game will be very disapointed indeed. I'd rewrite that statement but I can't seem to find the clear words to do so at the moment. Yarral (talk) 07:58, 18 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Xbox 360?

Funcom have stated that a Xbox 360 is in development; however, the game itself appears only for PC on their site, but I searched around on the www.ageofconan.com site and I found out that they are indeed making a Xbox 360 version. Here's the link I got from the official Conan site:

Will a 360 player be able to play against a PC player? Is there a monthly fee for playing on the 360 version like there is for PC or is a live account all that is required? StarkyD (talk) 14:22, 27 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Details aren't available yet, but a similar model already exists with Final Fantasy XI. In that game, PS2, PC, and X-Box 360 players all play together on the same servers and a player who owns more than one of the platforms can freely switch between them at will. So if you own both the 360 and PC versions of the game, then you can log on to your account through either machine. There's a good chance that it will be the same with Age of Conan. As with FFXI, it is all but guaranteed that a monthly subscription fee to Funcom will be required to play the game. --Junior612 (talk) 21:50, 27 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Pre-order items

A section on the special items gained on pre-orders or special edition copys would fit in this section i have noticed the collecters edition recives "Ring of Acheron gives the player higher XP points & Drinking Cape gives free drinks in all of Hyboria's taverns" and pre-orders will be between The Killer Rhino, The War Mammoth or The Curved Amazon Bow! depending on the retailer, i have so far found the followingitems at these retailers: From amazon will obtain the "The Amazonian Curved Bow" and "The bow can be given to eight characters per account" Best-buy offer a "War Rhino" "The War Mammoth - In addition, you will immediately receive the Mammoth Traveler's Bag giving you 8 additional inventory slots to help you in your quests." from EB games and gamestop 81.146.22.93 (talk) 10:46, 5 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

That sounds more like an advertisement for pre-orders than actually notable infomration. After the game has been out for some time, is it really going to be worth mentioning? —C. Raleigh (talk) 17:44, 6 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Likely note that these exclusive items can be attained by pre-order and later change it to could be. First person perspective, Third person, or combination?

edit

The article doesn't make clear whether the game is played in first person perspective, third person perspective or a combination of both. The camera perspective used is, I think, an important piece of information in distinguishing between different styles of video games. Dugwiki (talk) 20:24, 16 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well, the game is definitely third-person. —C. Raleigh (talk) 01:54, 18 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

It can be either. It defaults to third-person but you can scroll right "into" your character to play it in first person. You can switch between the two at will by zooming your view in and out using the mouse wheel. Yarral (talk) 07:41, 18 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

First person view offers a different approach to ranged combat. By giving up your situational(sp?) awareness you infact gain longer range. It's also sligtly harder to aim while in first person view (you have a crosshair that needs to be over your target while in the 3d person view you hit anything infront of you in a narrow cone meaning you can be slightly off, and that you need to take no heed of relative height). So it would be wrong to say that it is a 3d person game, since 1st person has a profound effect on how ranged combat works. It's a 3d/1st-person game, while it only affects ranged combat which one you chose to play in. Hello, Raleigh. I removed the "non-free" template warning as it seemingly implied the issue was copyright instead of excessiveness. Single player in info box

edit

The info box says single player / multi player. Although there are certainly parts you play in a single player instance at the start of the game I think it's not right to put single player in the info box as it's a multiplayer mmorpg that has a few single player components - it's not a single player game in any meaningful way. I think the current label is a little misleading but I'm reluctant to make this edit without some consensus. 84.246.168.11 (talk) 14:51, 19 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

From what I have read Age of Conan is designed for players to be able to level to max by single or multiplayer gaming, while primarily a multiplayer experience I believe it is possible to complete the game in a PVE sence on your own, you can certainly get to level 20 on your own. Sams37 (talk) 23:25, 19 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well that's true enough, but I'd say that except for the pre-20 parts it's not how the game is meant to be played. You can ignore the other players but they will still be there and on a PvP server will likely involve you at some point. I guess my point is that if someone bought this thinking it was a traditional single player game they would be very suprised indeed. It's no big deal but I'd prefer it described as a multi-player game maybe with a note somewhere explaining in more detail. Yarral (talk) 07:46, 20 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I agree. AoC is a multiplayer game and should be labeled as such. If a second label is really needed, we should invent and use a "online single player" label that's distinct from the misleading use of the standard "single player" label. CapnZapp (talk) 13:17, 26 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I removed the section. It was a complaint about possible inconvenience to players based on the combat system without source. Wikipedia is not a place to voice complaints about a game. It certainly isn't a place to voice theoretical complaints about a game. DirectX 10

edit

I edited the article to say that DirectX 10 is not supported at the time of launch but is planned for an early update. I read that it runs under DX10 at this time but makes no use of it's additional features until a later patch. This appears to be "common knowledge" but I can't find a source for it most likely because the game forums are currently shut down. I intend to update with a reference when I can find it but believe that it's not a contentious edit and the implication in the article that DX10 is used is currently wrong without it. Industry Standard for Online Fee?

Character "races"

edit

Normally it would be appropriate to link to the fantasy tropes page, explaining why elves and gnomes are called "races" (and not "species").

But why that link here? The three character races in AoC is, strangely enough for a fantasy game perhaps, actual races (albeit invented ones rather than existing ones), not "fantasy races" or species-races...

Please include an explanation of what such things as a "priest" or a "rogue" is (in the MMO meaning). As it is now, this page doesn't work for the uninitiated.

Of course, if you think no explanation is needed, then thus must surely be because these concepts are so well known. And then it should be no problem procuring links to appropriate introductions! :)

Two paragraphs from the Setting section

edit

I've moved these two paragraphs from the article to be rewritten, or even left out altogether:

The primitive brutality and decadent bacchanalia of the Hyborian Age is one of the unique attractions of Age of Conan due to its stark contrast to the high fantasy settings that typify the majority of contemporary MMOs such as EverQuest II, The Lord of the Rings Online and Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. In Age of Conan, there are few of the elements that are common in high fantasy, such as elves, halflings, or Arthurian courtliness.

Instead, Hyboria is a land of neither good nor evil, but "moral shades of gray" in which Conan, himself, is a barbaric anti-hero and his enemies are, upon occasion, rightful princes or altruistic minstrels revolting against his militaristic autocracy. As such, this moral ambiguity and bloodthirsty atavism of R.E. Howard's Hyborian Age sometimes disconcerts newcomers to the lore who are accustomed to "high fantasy".

|in fact age of conan is socialist. all the good items are won in quests and are not tradable. |thus everyone has the same gear. all cloths look the same. if you attack someone a lower level |than you they get a huge buff, thus making leveling a waste of time. |socialism and video games do not mix.

Character Classes

Ingame, many guilds have members who have not logged in for more than 2 weeks. and player population seems to be a fraction of what it was when Age of Conan first launched." - There are several misleading, and unverified bits of information in this. First, is there any verifiable source that can accurately track subscriptions and can back up that they are 'plumetting' for this game? Second, I am sure that on a daily basis on World Of Warcraft's forums, or Star Wars Galaxies' forums, or Everquest 2's forums, that players post thier dissatisfaction with thier respective game. Third, guilds can have members that don't log on for two weeks and still be active. And as for player population, that's dependent on which server you're on. I know on my server, Thog, population has maintained. When I still peek in Tortage, or run through Tarantia, I see tons of people.

I'm not a spokesperson for Funcom or anything like that, but the information in the above paragraph seems to be input from someone who did not have a positive gaming experience, and decided to place bias, unverified information into this article, for the sheer purpose of slamming a game they didn't like. I'm all for presenting facts and all, but at least let's try and back up our facts, okay? Pingsteal (talk) 06:24, 11 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Controversial Subject Material Removed

edit

A HUGE selling point was never discussed in this article and is unfair as it directly points to the success or failure to the selling of the game. Years prior to its release beta testers got to see the full nudity player versus player arena where dismemberment and gore were unbelievalbe. Some video files still exist on the internet. Sex slaves and co-players provided a sex buff. Currently they are resizing and shaping the breasts of characters. All these points met with heavy scrutiny with the American community and many aspects were removed before distribution. While some players actually felt they were locked into buying something else, parents felt was better for their kids that ignore warning labels and were going to obtain the game anyway. Leaving this out is a major oversight in the article as it did effect sales, identify who US censors are, and gives a defination of what is reasonable in gaming today. In addition marketing was done for the game to be made like a console, so it could be directly exported in time for the console version. As well, as it matching the content of the contracted movie in one year. Imlookingnow (talk) 23:35, 12 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Review Scores

edit

I thought the review scores were rather low for a game that's been talked about enthusiastically. If you check the links, the scores entered into the wiki page don't match them. If I didn't know better, I'd say somebody was deliberately trying to put people off the game, knowing that a lot of people will come here to check it out!

I'm going to put the scores back so they match the referenced articles, please don't moderate me! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.207.239.245 (talk) 13:37, 15 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Okay, I've corrected the scores and cut out a big chunk of unreferenced criticism. Looks like somebody did a real hatchet job on this game, keep an eye out for them folks!217.207.239.245 (talk) 14:02, 15 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

The scores are messed up again... --84.46.205.209 (talk) 05:51, 31 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Login music?

edit

What is the original login music called? I know it is not written or copyrighted by AoC, since I have also heard it in a few documentaries. 71.82.138.19 (talk) 01:37, 26 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Number of game copies sold

edit

Why have you deleted info about numbers of game-copies sold upon the game release? Just few days before I have seen them, numbers, here. One more thing: Directx 10 has been test implemented 25.03.2009. Game has small renewal now with some players coming back —Preceding unsigned comment added by Edelward (talkcontribs) 12:34, 28 March 2009 (UTC) Edelward (talk) 13:18, 6 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Critical reception section

edit

I would propose to remove this entire section. Most initial reviews, which were mostly based on an initial impression may have been positive, but the general sentiment towards this game turned negative very quickly afterwards. Now I realize this is something that isn't really possible to grasp accurately in an encyclopedia article, but, based on facts or not, the wording in this paragraph yields a really distorted view of what the general perception of the game actually was. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.145.13.212 (talk) 17:26, 4 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

>I would like to see this changed aswell. I remember most of my WoW guild moving to Age of Conan. The crashing funcom share prices, the negative rumours spreading, and people in my guild trying to remain optimistic. Then we finally got out of the starting zone and learnt for ourselves what a buggy unfinished mess the game was. The positive tone of the article really warps the real history. I've heard the game has been getting better after so many patches, but if that's true then it should be explained. It's been many years and I'm still bitter about the money I wasted on the collector's edition. J1812 (talk) 23:29, 27 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Anticheat Technology

edit

Should something be added about the anti cheat technology used by Age of Conan? For instance, World of Warcraft uses Warden, Steam has Valve Anti Cheat, etc. --Elven6 (talk) 23:21, 25 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

MobyGames link?

Per the notice in the External links section, how about adding the link to the MobyGames article?

Changing the title of the article

edit

As we all know the name of Age Of Conan: Hyborian Adventures has been changed to Age Of Conan Unchained, so I think the title of the article about the game of the articles should be changed. I would like to invite all the people who have edited this article to give their opinions on this matter please. --MegaCyanide666 (talk) 10:47, 02 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Age of Conan: UnchainedAge of Conan – The game was subtitled 3 years as "Hyborian Adventures". It got most of the publicity when it had the old title: 44 reviews at Metacritic for Hyborian Adventures vs. 0 reviews for Unchained. "Age of Conan" seems to me to be the common title for the article. Mika1h (talk) 22:46, 15 August 2015 (UTC) --Relisted. George Ho (talk) 06:22, 23 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
