Documentation and the lack thereof

edit

I have never seen any documentation that William Joy held any rank in any military, much less General or Colonel. In the Canadian census (Jan 1852) his occupation was listed as "harness maker". I have never seen any documentation that Agnes Joy worked in any circus. In fact, this is the only assertion reported in the press regarding her life before 1861 that she ever flatly denied. There are certain thing about Agnes that indicate that she may have worked as an actress, such as the adoption of additional names. I believe, but have yet to obtain the records, that she was baptized simply, Elizabeth Joy. "Agnes", "Winona" & "Leclerc" were all adopted later. It is possible that she worked under the name "Agnes Leclerc" because this is the name she used on her marriage record. Perhaps to explain why she had all those relatives surnamed "Joy", she just merged all the names. Consider that she alone of all her siblings used 5 names. Her closest sibling, Deliah, used 4; five others used 3 names (first, middle, last); all five of her half-siblings used 3 names and her sister Jane, who died in 1855, has no recorded middle name. Why would Agnes, alone among all her siblings have 4 given names? She was also very flexible about religion. In 1852 the family was listed as Presbyterian. When she married Salm-Salm she was Catholic. When she married Charles Hennage in 1876 it was in a Protestant chapel. Keep in mind that the press of the day is a very unreliable source of information. Since she refused to discuss her past with them, they simply made up stories or printed rumors. 67.61.205.10 (talk) 13:33, 24 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
