Agouti is a protein found in the epidermis that binds to MC1R producing a yellow/tan fur color. Agouti Related protein (Ag R P) is structurally similar protein important in metabolism regulation that is found in the brain. AgRP is AgrP. peptide and protein are synonymous. i.e. these should be merged.
Agouti protein was named after the South-American rodent because it produces coat color similar to this rodent. In mice, agouti protein is transiently synthesized in the skin to give different coat colors during development. Certain mice however possess a mutation in the Agouti gene inducing a prolong and ectopic expression of agouti including in the brain. These animals develop obesity and diabetes by blocking melanocortin 4 receptors (Mc4r).
