Novice
editIn the Talk page of the James Cayne article, Greenberg is said to be a novice. It is not clear if this means a novice at bridge or at finance. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.181.145.214 (talk) 10:51, 12 May 2010 (UTC)
- it means a relative novice at bridge, when he hired Cayne.
- At Talk:James Cayne/Archives/2014#Greenberg, essentially this question was asked 2008-03 and answered (with appropriate revision of that article) by me 2013-01, with minor clarification today 2014-11.

- In the biography Jimmy Cayne, we say that he was a full-time professional bridge player when hired by ACG in 1969 (age 35).
- Elsewhere I have read that Cayne scored his job by chutzpah ... (finds it by Google search, a frequently amazing service) ... "Mr. Cayne boldly declared that he was a better player than Mr. Greenberg and always would be and was rewarded for his moxie by being hired on the spot for $70,000." "Million-Dollar Hobby: Inside the world of big-money bridge". Greg Hanlon. The New York Observer. November 20, 2013.
- See: Apocrypha.
- I suppose that Greenberg was an intermediate player, no absolute novice, in 1969, and know from his record that he advanced beyond that "relative novice" level. --P64 (talk) 00:41, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
Philip Alder featured "Alan Greenberg, known as Ace" in the NYTimes bridge column at his 85ht birthday two years ago.
- ["In Bridge, Game of Chicago at Regency Whist Club", Alder, NYT 2012-09-28
I found this by Google search 'Regency Whist Club' for another purpose. NYT archives search may find other bridge columns. --P64 (talk) 00:46, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
