Occupation

I would like to start a discussion here about what editors think is appropriate to identify as Jackon's occupation for the lead, infobox, and short description. Based on this discussion between Carey3146 and me, the options we are considering are "business executive" or "business executive and director".

My view is that "business executive" is sufficient as it generally encompasses all of the roles and positions he held in his career (chairmain, CEO, director, managing director, etc.) and that adding "director" does not significantly communicate additional key facts about him that are not already their from being identified as a "business executive" holding the notable positions he had (which are identified in the lead and the infobox). Per {{infobox person}}, |occupation= is for "Occupation(s) as given in the lead.". The lead identifies him as "businessman":

Alan Robert Jackson, AO, FCA (30 March 1936 – 4 August 2018) was an Australian businessman who was the chief executive officer of BTR plc between 1991 and 1996 and chairman of the Australian Trade Commission (Austrade) between 1995 and 2001. He was also a board member of the Reserve Bank of Australia between 1991 and 2001.

While it is tempting to want to add more in the lead or in |occupation= we need to be mindful of MOS:ROLEBIO, which states:

Avoid overloading the lead paragraph with various and sundry roles

Remember, too, that MOS:INFOBOXPURPOSE says to "summarize key facts" and:

The less information it contains, the more effectively it serves that purpose, allowing readers to identify key facts at a glance.

I propose that we (1) change the lead from "businessman" to "business executive", (2) change |occupation= from "Business executive and director" to "Business executive", and (3) leave {{short description}} as it is with "Australian business executive (1936–2018)". I'd be happy with "businessman" or "businessperson" in all three of lead, infobox and short description. "Executive" can be read in different ways and sometimes be a bit of a weasel word. But between the options you suggest, I'd keep it simpler and go "business executive" rather than "business executive and director". Tacyarg (talk) 02:29, 25 January 2023 (UTC)

Sourcing

Many of the references used in this article as faux-references in that they are primary and/or self published sources. Others do not have reliability, and yet there do not have significant coverage, by which is meant upwards of three substantial paragraphs all about Jackson.

The article needs a study of the sources and flagging of them or removal, a long job. I shall certainly start this and work quietly through it, and I would appreciate other editors' assistance. I believe Jackson to pass WP:BIO, but I believe we should source or kill the full, clutter and flummery which is "weasel-sourced". 🇺🇦 Fiddle^Timtrent Faddle^Talk to me 🇺🇦 16:46, 1 October 2023 (UTC)

Junk

Jackson was a fellow of various chartered organisations that were predominantly in the accounting and managing fields. He was also a member of the Australian Club and the Commonwealth Golf Club in Melbourne.
