Alan McDiarmid or Alan MacDiarmid ? --Eno-ja 17:28, 15 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

His self-written biographical outline at the Nobel Prize site seems to support the latter — he specifically gives spells his surname MacDiarmid when he mentions his father. The MacDiarmid Institute, named after him, also uses the latter. -- Vardion 05:51, 16 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

In the merger of the two sites, the changes that I made somehow are obscured, even though they're still visible on the last edit. Is there a way to unmask them, or does it just involve gruntwork to manually integrate the best of the "McDiarmid" site into the "MacDiarmid" site? Thanks, DJRafe 03:49, 25 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Came across this page while cleaning up WP:PM - I'm afraid gruntwork will be involved... xC | 13:01, 25 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Completed the merge. I'm pretty sure I integrated both pages completely, but please do have a look to make sure there aren't any errors. Cheers! xC | 13:23, 25 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wow, great job! Thanks, DJRafe 03:24, 26 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks DJRafe! I just went through the article again and found a few things that need a look at-
  • A picture is needed
  • References need to be put in for the content
  • I'm bloody sure he's got some more awards but off the top of my head I can't seem to remember any - could someone look up how he was honored?
  • Selected Publications is very well done, kudos to the original authors. This might be hammering the issue, perhaps, but I'd like to suggest adding a line or two about how those works are important in the field of chemistry. That would truly illustrate his fantastic contributions.
Surely a Nobel prize winner deserves more on his page than what he has right now. I'm dead sure with a picture and a little bit of googling we could get this article up to GA. Terribly overworked right now, but I'll get to it as soon as I can. All editors comments would be greatly appreciated, we're always looking for ideas to make things better :) Cheers! xC | 16:47, 26 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

It might be too much to give a one line summary of each paper, but I see your point. The catch is that not every scientific publication out there is a world-beater, far from it. Plus, the publications tends to be more for the academic nerd-types (I am one, after a fashion) who have a complete list mania. Given that his list of publications is apparently over 600, a full list of his published papers is probably out of the question, unless one of us had way too much time on our hands.

Maybe we can ask Penn for permission to take a nice picture of him for use on wikipedia.

I'm sure we can find more awards on his Nobel Prize page. Anyway, we can keep this going as a nice work in progress. Thanks, DJRafe 03:37, 29 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

rating

edit

Someone reassessed this article after your request as still Start-class. I completely agree, but want to express my congratulations on a significant improvement. This Start-class rating is now fully deserved, before your improvements it really wasn't anything more than a stub, and it would have been downgraded sooner or later. So you really accomplished a promotion from stub to start class. Errabee 07:07, 27 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Errabee, quick work! Happy editing! xC | 08:30, 27 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

references

edit

The content needed referencing, so I set about it (before, after). Just wanted to add a note on the talk page here that there's a wealth of information out on the net. Although there isn't much known about his personal life, the refs at the end of the page - one - seem to be useful and could help in expanding the article further. Also, if you look through the refs 1,2,3 on the page you could find further links which could be of some use. Just wanted to help out any other editors looking over this page. Children and grandchildren

edit

inserted into the article some time back -

MacDiarmid's first wife, Marian Mathieu, whom he had married in 1954[1], died in 1990. He is survived by four children: Heather McConnell, Dawn Hazelett, Duncan MacDiarmid and Gail Williams, from their marriage and nine grandchildren: Dr. Sean McConnell, Dr. Ryan McConnell, Rebecca McConnell, Clayton Hazelett, Wesley Hazelett, Langston MacDiarmid, Aubree Williams, Austin Williams and George Williams. MacDiarmid is also survived by his second wife, Gayl Gentile, whom he had married in 2005.[2]

The names of his kids and grandkids might not be notable enough for inclusion. Kids still maybe. Grandkids? I doubt it. Again, we don't have a ref for this. Should we keep it in?

What evidence is there for MacDiarmid having US citizenship? 31.48.245.64 (talk) 10:07, 14 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
