Publicist / neutral viewpoint

edit

This article really looks like it was written by a publicist.

Is there anything inherently wrong with it being written by a publicist? I'm sure there's some Wikipedia rule against it, but it seems like a theoretically fine way to get things rolling. DoorFrame 15:57, 8 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Birthday

edit

When is her birthday? According to Billy Joel's page: "Their daughter, Alexa Ray Joel, was born December 29, 1985." However, her own page lists her birthday as January 1, 1986.

According to the year of birth on Katie Lee Joel's page, she's only three years younger than Alexa. TJSwoboda (talk) 20:12, 4 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I believe you mean older.24.187.128.89 (talk) 00:07, 26 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Please note that December 29th is well sourced in news media (papers cited in the document as well as this that I found: Lexington Herald-Leader) as well as various other rather reliable databases (IMDb for one. The only source I can find for January 1st, is some guy's blog. Please make sure to check current references before changing things, particularly for already well cited statements. Agree with GTMusashi: The noted online article claims to be published on December 31, 1985 and thus apparently disproves Jan. 1, 1986 as a possible date of birth. BILLY JOEL, CHRISTIE BRINKLEY HAVE THEIR FIRST CHILD, A GIRL. Born "about 11:45 p.m. Sunday" ---> December 29 fell on a Sunday in 1985. I've put this online article in a footnote to the infobox, to supplement the existing two print (newspaper) cites. RCraig09 (talk) 19:55, 14 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Photo(s)

edit

I've just replaced my earlier (blurry) 2009 concert pic File:AlexaRayJoelsigning20090824.jpg with a new (professional) one File:AlexaRayJoel250x20100626.jpg published under OTRS (not relying on "fair use"). Should my old photo be inserted somewhere in the body of the article? Post your thoughts here! RCraig09 (talk) 18:13, 28 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Fair use of album art

edit

Issue: "fair use" of album cover art (image) in section of biography dedicated to describing that album. Needed: specific reasoning from editors at least familiar with or preferably expert at fair use in copyright, and Wikipedia non-free content WP:NFC. RCraig09 (talk) 20:41, 2 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

WP:NFCI (Non-free content, images) states that the following use is acceptable: "Cover art: Cover art from various items, for identification only in the context of critical commentary of that item (not for identification without critical commentary)." RCraig09 (talk) 20:41, 2 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

I want to use this album art in the "Sketches" section of the Alexa Ray Joel article--a section in which the album, the album art, each track on the album, and two album reviews, are discussed. However Hullaballoo Wolfowitz (talk) removed the artwork here with the edit summary "still an obvious nfcc violation." (similar to this explanation)--which is vague and conclusory. Please comment below! RCraig09 (talk) 20:41, 2 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Given the depth of commentary related to the album (and as long as the album doesn't have an exclusive article of its own), fair use most definitely applies to use of the image here. I'd be interested to hear the details of Hullaballoo's rationale on the matter, because at face value I see no justification for it.

Follow-up (March 2013): The footnote to WP:NFCI §1 first appearing in Sept. 2012, implies that cover art is includable in an article about the album, but usually not includable in the biographical article about the singer even in a 'section' about the album. I think that this result is a bit absurd; further, this footnote is actually contradictory to the implicit meaning of §1 itself, in the situation in which the biography has the required critical commentary. But it's not a big issue for me. RCraig09 (talk) 15:44, 9 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
