Public schools
editAlexandra High School is a public school. The South African Schools Act of 1996 states that there are two categories of schools in South Africa: public and independent schools. In England, some of the older independent schools are referred to as public schools but this term is not used in South Africa. - Raker 13:31, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
- I think you'll find that all the top independent schools in SA are referred to as Public schools. As they typically followed the English terminology (unsurprisingly as SA was a British colony). Public school is commonly used to refer to a top private school not a state school in spite of what the SA Schools Act said. Wikipedia practice is to employ the most common term used. This is not public school. Roydosan 12:41, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
Believe me, none of the top independent schools in South Africa refer to themselves or are referred to as "public schools" even though they are based on the English public school model. They are officially independent schools but most commonly called private schools. "Public school" is both the official and most commonly used term for what are known as state schools in the UK. - Raker 15:20, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
Raker is correct. Alexandra High School is most definitely a public school, and the term 'public' means (at least partially) state funded. Schools that don't get money from the government are private schools, and are usually the more exclusive/expensive schools.
