Unreferenced sections
editWith this edit, I have nuked three unreferenced sections: Other interests, Financial background, Private life. Feel free to put the content back but only with appropriate references. Who knows whether any of this is true? If it is, there will be sources somewhere. Schwede66 17:50, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
- Hi @Schwede66: some quick googling suggests that it's been assembled from sources such as Papers Past, eg [1]for the presentation to the queen. Given that someone's done all this work, wouldn't it be nicer to just mark it as [citation needed] instead? Somej (talk) 21:31, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Somej: Are you part of the WPNZ Facebook group? There's a recent discussion about being much more strict about unreferenced content. I'm currently fixing up John Logan Campbell; what's written in the unreferenced section "Cornwall Park" is a piece of fiction. It's been there since
20142012 and you can find the same fiction on quite a few websites, with WP possibly the source of that. With that in mind, I'm of the firm opinion that it is better to remove completely unreferenced sections, note that on the talk page, and if anyone feels like it, they can selectively restore content and reference it. - Hi @Schwede66: yes i've seen that discussion, thank you; it prompted my latest flurry on William Crowther. For Kidd, given that it's unlikely to be 'fiction' like the John Logan Campbell stuff, wouldn't it be kinder to give the original author (not me, btw) a nudge with some liberal use of [citation needed] before nuking such large sections? Cheers. Somej (talk) 22:05, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Somej: I would have taken that course of action if there was any point to it. The editor in question hasn't edited since 2013, though. Very unlikely that they would see such notice. Hence my blanket removal. Schwede66 22:09, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
