Names in Seneca quotes
edit"Letum/ Ker (Ruin) and Lues/ Nosos (Pestilence), Mors/ Thanatos (Death), Labor/ Ponos (Hardship), Tabes/ Phthisis (Corruption) and Dolor/ Algos (Distress), fit company for him, shall all depart together". This is a bit of a mess. Obviously Seneca actually just uses the Latin names, and the quote doesn't follow that, but is smooshing together the Roman, Greek, and translated English names in a very awkward way. Be clearer and better-looking to have "Dolor [Algos; Distress]" and so forth, unless anyone has a better idea. 109.255.211.6 (talk) 07:25, 8 February 2024 (UTC)
- The Greek equivalents should be removed altogether unless they can be sourced. – Michael Aurel (talk) 08:06, 8 February 2024 (UTC)
- That'd be awkward given that the article's at the Greek name, but {{cn}}s indeed. 109.255.211.6 (talk) 09:06, 8 February 2024 (UTC)
- Fair enough. Checking a few reference works, it seems pretty clear that the only actual mention of the Algea is in Hesiod's Theogony. As I can't find a source to suggest that the Algea mentioned there are the same as any figures referred to under a Latin name, the parts sourced to Hyginus, Statius, and Seneca should be removed. Unfortunately a lot of pages for these minor personifications (especially the Hesiodic children of Nyx and Eris) tend to contain a fair bit of OR (probably added by people with good intentions, but who looked at only primary sources when writing). – Michael Aurel (talk) 10:32, 8 February 2024 (UTC)

Algos → Algea (mythology) – Hesiod does not refer to "Algos", but rather to the plural Ἄλγεα. See Most's Greek and translation, as well as Caldwell's translation and note. I have no opinion as to whether the mythological Algea or the company (currently at Algea) is the primary topic; if people feel that this page is the primary topic, then we could instead move the company to Algea (company), and this page to Algea. – Michael Aurel (talk) 23:06, 8 February 2024 (UTC)
- Neither seems like it's likely to be overwhelmingly predominant, so I'd suggest a disambig at that title, and moving both pages to qualified names. 109.255.211.6 (talk) 00:49, 10 February 2024 (UTC)
- Sure, I'm fine with that solution. – Michael Aurel (talk) 09:24, 10 February 2024 (UTC)
- Support either suggestion. Paul August ☎ 18:29, 10 February 2024 (UTC)
