Algonquin Provincial Park was nominated as a Geography and places good article, but it did not meet the good article criteria at the time (November 29, 2012). There are suggestions on the review page for improving the article. If you can improve it, please do; it may then be renominated. |
Tone of the Article
editSomeone posted above that they didn't like the tone of the article and there is a box on the top of the article about how it is written. i don't see anything wrong with talking about the rules and such. it is importand information for potential park visitors so that they know what to expect and are prepared Magnetawan (talk) 13:20, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
- I personally don't see anything terribly wrong with the tone; if the person who tagged the article could explain why they tagged it, maybe we'll have some place to start. Like most WP articles, it could use some tweaking, such as using proper list techniques to list the plants, animals, etc, but unless there is explanation as to why there is an issue with the tone and style I think it would be okay to remove the tag.BC (talk) 14:50, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
- I agree and think it should be taken down unless someone gives an arguement about what specifically is wrong with it and what needs to be fixed --Magnetawan (talk) 15:20, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
Sounds too much like it was written by the park, stating the rules and such.
- I think the summer camps section should be expanded and the articles on Camp Northway and Camp Pathfinder should be merged into it.
Grand Slam 7 15:16, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
- I am against a merge - once the Algonquin article is as full as it should be, it will be too long with the camps within it. The camps are within the park but are not an important or integral component.Mark Nesbitt 21:00, 27 September 2006 (UTC)
- Given the photos and info, I think a seperate Camps of Algonquin Provincial Park is needed, but not individual articles. Padraic 13:47, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
- Nobody seems to be for a merge, I'll remove the template.--Grand Slam 7 13:52, 22 October 2006 (UTC)
Links
editI don't know how to write them in, but there seem to be a lot of articles about things in the park which aren't mentioned here: Achray, Ontario, Brent crater, Brent, Ontario etc. Maybe a category is needed? --Padraic 16:42, 13 April 2007 (UTC)
- I agree something is needed to incorporate these links and many others such as links to the resorts which once existed in the part. perhaps even a category on the resorts themselves I think. It would be great if the links you mentioned could be incorported into the other information. Maybe also consider adding all the links to other locations in the park to the See Also section. Magnetawan (talk) 13:10, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
Discussion of scale
editSome people may not realize just how large the park is. It is three times as large as the country of Luxembourg in Europe. Is this worth a mention in the article? It may have more impact than a numerical value of square kilometers.131.104.115.99 15:33, 4 July 2007 (UTC) If most people are better with distances than area, then adding the dimensions would help. I estimate it would take a week for a strong canoeist to cross the widest part of the park. If someone has done it before, perhaps that will help with the scale as well.User:Andrew 10:20, Oct 13, 2009 (EST) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.155.51.153 (talk)
Fair use rationale for Image:Algonquin Stamp 1993.jpg
editImage:Algonquin Stamp 1993.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Maps
editI found a map on the government website; I'm not sure if it qualifies as fair use as a government publication, but if someone wants to check it out it might be okay to use. Mr. Absurd (talk) 20:20, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
- I added the tag in the hopes that someone could find or create a free map, not just a fair use one. Thanks for looking though. --Padraic 16:14, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

Birds of Algonquin
editOk, I am no bird expert but this is ridiculous... there are only Blue Jays in the park?? How about Loons, Crows, Mergansers, Cardinals, etc, etc, etc. This is not my subject to fill in but frankly the section is poor. I listed 4 more birds without even thinking about it.... I forgot humming birds, and owls. You see and hear both of these bird quite often...
I'm no bird expert either, but it was simply laziness that stopped me from adding the birds section when I created the other flaura and fauna lists. I have now at least made an attempt at filling out this section.-- Tom MacPherson (talk) 13:44, 1 September 2009 (UTC)
2008 Map Image
editI was wondering if someone could help me update the '2008 map' on this page? The new 2009 version is on my website - www.algonquinmap.com
Jeffrey (The creator of the map)
- Hi Jeff, added your web site as an external link. (Love your map). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.155.51.153 (talk) 14:25, 13 October 2009 (UTC)
Image Gallery dispute
editThere is a dispute box about the gallery. Given the nature of this article and its subject (i.e. the beauty of the place and its natural wonders) I do not see the gallery as inappropriate. It is relevant here as it would be for a painter (Tom Thompson for example) where a visual image is the most efficient way to impart a sense of the place.
Famous Deaths
editI don't think John Denison should be listed here. Is this a list of famous people who happened to die in the park, or a list of noteworthy deaths of otherwise unknown people? John Denison had no fame outside the park that I know of. If he is listed, then shouldn't we list all of the people killed or attacked by bears in the park? And why do we have a 'famous deaths' section here at all? Tom MacPherson (talk) 13:45, 1 September 2009 (UTC)
- I've deleted this person. The guideline says that to be significant enough for inclusion, the person should warrant his/her own article. I agree with you; I also don't like the 'famous deaths' section. It doesn't seem to fit and doesn't really add any value to the article. The section is also attracting inappropriate additions. Pretty soon everyone who has heard of someone who died in the park will want the name listed, and we will be continally removing those names. It has also attracted family members who feel their relative is noteworthy (they would be to them) and therefore should be listed. BCtalk to me 15:30, 1 September 2009 (UTC)
Petroglyphs
editAren't there several ancient series of petroglyphs located in Algonquin park? Some pictures of these would add tone to the article...--Oracleofottawa (talk) 05:39, 22 November 2010 (UTC)
Outfitters and Guides section
editThis section was added to provide relevant information for visitors to the park. Please limit entries to one line and avoid superlatives. Happy paddling!Stuart L. Letovsky (talk) 13:44, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
Citation to 1892 Royal Commission
editCan the original poster please provide the citation to the 1892 Royal Commission (as opposed to the statute [56 Vic., c.8]? I'm curious to read it. Yes, Really. Thanks.. --Steeleworthy (talk) 02:37, 16 February 2012 (UTC)
Update: Oct. 2014. I have provided a link to a transcription of the Royal Commission report. It's not exactly what you want, but pretty darn close! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.15.55.110 (talk) 14:16, 10 October 2014 (UTC)
Native history/land claims
editI just removed content re: Native history and land claims since the bulk of it was copyvio. I believe, however, that some content about Native history is relevant. IMO, the land claims content, most of which was a very long quote was also copyvio and was way too detailed. I do, however, think that a short mention about land claims is a good idea once this section is rewritten to WP specs. -- BC talk to me 22:45, 17 December 2015 (UTC)
Incidents
editThe wolf attack incident in 1996 happened at that park, so it should have it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:18D:4701:C4A0:892A:BB54:F160:8D2A (talk) 11:22, 18 June 2018 (UTC)

Incidents at the park
editShould the incidents be added on the page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.86.71.225 (talk) 18:38, 13 September 2018 (UTC)

Driving logs down the Oxtongue River eventually to Trenton?
editThe "Railway, settlement, and the beginning of tourism" subsection has this text: "The village of Mowat on the west side of Canoe Lake was first established in 1893 as a logging camp for the Gilmour Lumber Company. From there, logs were driven down the Oxtongue River towards Lake of Bays and eventually on to Trenton." (my emphasis added) The Oxtongue River does flow to the Lake of Bays, but the Lake of Bays flows via the South Branch Muskoka River, Muskoka River, Lake Muskoka and the Moon River to Georgian Bay on Lake Huron. However, Trenton is at the mouth of the Trent River on the Bay of Quinte, Lake Ontario. The two river systems are not interconnected. How would logs have been driven down (meaning floated down by water) to Trenton starting at the Oxtongue River? --papageno (talk) 21:29, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
- See here for an explanation of how logs were transported overland between the two watersheds: https://www.muskokaregion.com/community-story/9533044-algonquin-to-trenton-an-ill-fated-attempt-to-save-a-lumber-legacy/ This is one more thing that should be cited and explained in the article... I intend to put some significant work into it eventually. Somatochlora (talk) 22:55, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
- An incredible story. Thanks for clearing that up, Somatochlora. --papageno (talk) 05:08, 10 October 2020 (UTC)
