editAlice J. Palmer preceeded Barack Obama as Illinois State Senator, ? - 1/8/97. As I recall, she had wanted to file for a higher office, but had been nosed out, and Obama got her hastily gathered petitions to run for reelection thrown out so he could run unopposed.
