 The artificiality of civilisation. Senhor José learns from an articulate shepherd how country people with their more ancient ways resist and overturn urban values.

 The loneliness of the individual. Senhor José has no living family, no friends and at the Registry staff are not allowed to chat. He is existentially alone.

 The impossibility of knowing other humans. Senhor José realises will never find the truth about the celebrities whose cuttings he collects or the unknown woman who fascinates him.

 Innate human guilt. Senhor José, endemically afraid of exposure, conceals and lies about his private activities.

 The absence of God. Senhor José’s reflections and prayers rise no further than his ceiling, which is not interested in his fate.
