editThis discussion page is telling me there is no article called "Alleghenian orogeny" but of course there is. This page is a start, but this orogeny is apparently a very complex and multifarious event. Apparently there were many sub-orogenies that are considered part of this one, beginning well before the collision of Laurentia with Africa? It would be nice to get a more detailed writeup giving all the forces, events, places and times involved.
Factual error?
edit- "Approximately 350 million to 300 million years ago, in the Carboniferous period, the combined continents of Europe and Africa (Gondwana) collided with North America to form the supercontinent of Pangaea."
It was Euramerica (Europe and North America) which collided with Gondwana. (See these Missisippian and Pennsylvanian maps).--Jyril 19:33, 3 May 2006 (UTC)

The Britannica article is titled Alleghenian orogeny.
I think we should use Alleghanian, due to both specialized Google searches showing its popularity. —hike395 (talk) 05:07, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
- Especially since the mountains are spelled Allegheny, though many little towns are "Alleghany". Keep 'em guessing!--Wetman (talk) 22:51, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

Laurasia vs Euramerica
editMy last edit marked the reversion as vandalism: that was an error, I'm assuming good faith for the anon editor. I believe that Euramerica is the correct term for the continent in the Paleozoic, while Laurasia is a term for the Mesozoic (please correct me if I am wrong). Pangaea also seems to be the spelling preferred by WP. —hike395 (talk) 12:12, 26 April 2012 (UTC)
Map
editIf anyone has a better map, such as one showing the entire extent of the orogeny, that would be a great addition. I added a map available from wiki-commons because I felt at least one location map was needed. Elriana (talk) 23:28, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
