Twins?

Were they twins, and there are two versions of their conception, or not, in which case perhaps the mother changed seduction strategies between their births?

Quote?

There were no quotes around

before their downy beards had even sprouted

so i can't tell if that is Homer's poetic wording or an awkward translation from Greek of a description intended to say simply "at an age when they had no beards whatsoever." I simply reworded.
