Edited this some. Technically, most alternative currency systems are not strictly independent from a national currency--and many are strongly dependent on them. Also, not all alternative currencies are "designed"; they can also arise "naturally" under harsh economic conditions. I plan to greatly expand this article, with reference, soon. Plan to add headings on "features" of alternative currency systems, reasons for using them, categorizing them, history, etc. Cazort 18:19, 14 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Cryptocurrencies

edit

This page should include cryptocurrencies as a class of alternative currency, rather than have multiple individual flavors of cryptocurrencies to be listed among the main list of Alternative Currencies. The several hundred cryptocurrencies (by which we mean distributed cryptographic messaging systems which use some form of blockchain based ledger for accounting) now extant, along with the tens of thousands likely to be created in the future, as well as the fact that their underlying principles of operation are nearly identical apart from tweaks to their incentivization structures, means that listing them individually here diminishes the diversity exhibited among other alternate currency systems already listed, as well as the distinctiveness of cryptocurrency itself as an entire class of alternate currency. It also doesn't help that all of these alternate cryptocurrencies have been or are presently the subjects of aggressive promotion by their respective developers and speculators in order to create favorable trading opportunities for themselves; a force this Wikipedia page should resist through consistent application of relevant guidelines (WP:NOTABILITY and WP:PROMOTION come to mind) lest it become flooded with dozens or hundreds of them over time.

The list of alternative currencies maybe improve by sort by type (crypto, local etc) as a section then alphabetically the specific (bitcoin, totnes pound etc) currency? BTW Sartex was added with a link to a page in Italian - looks like a Commercial credit circuit?Jonpatterns (talk) 10:40, 20 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

This reference is used to make statements about 'alternative currencies', but it does not use that term, instead it talks about barter.Jonpatterns (talk) 12:25, 19 June 2015 (UTC)Reply
