Existing information on opening date

edit

The existing opening date of 1915 looks wrong given the references I have added. I don't have a copy of Butt which is presumably the source? Robin84F (talk) 17:58, 4 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Robin84F: Butt (p. 16) has three entries:
  • Alveley Colliery Sidings OP after 1915; RN Alveley Colliery Halt
  • Alveley Colliery Halt RF Alveley Colliery Sidings; (OP&)RN Alveley Halt by June 1954
  • Alveley Halt (OP&)RF Alveley Colliery Halt by June 1954; CL 9 September 1963
Butt's codes are: CL - closed; OP - opened; RF - renamed from; RN - renamed to. (OP) means opened for public use having already been open for private use.
which means that it was originally opened as a private station (presumably for the use of the miners) at some point after 1915, with the name Alveley Colliery Sidings; it was renamed Alveley Colliery Halt at an unknown date; and at some point before June 1954 it was renamed Alveley Halt and opened for public use (June 1954 being the earliest date that a published timetable showed the station); finally it was closed on 9 September 1963. --Redrose64 (talk) 12:05, 5 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Redrose64: Thanks, that helps understand where the info came from, although I have some doubts on Butt's information. The 1948 BR(W) Working Timetable includes both Alveley Halt and Alveley Sidings. The latter were around 27 chains further north (in fact where Country Park Halt now stands), which does not really correspond with one being renamed as the other. Perhaps rather than being renamed, when Alveley Colliery first opened the miners would use the sidings as the 'halt' until the dedicated halt was built at a later date as per Mitchell and Smith (speculation on my part). Regarding 'after 1915', that could of course mean any date. However the first shaft at Alveley was not sunk until 1935; before then the area was mined from Highley Colliery which was serviced by the station there. Marshall confirms Alveley sidings were built for the new colliery. However I won't change the info in the history box for now, pending any other thoughts. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Robin84F (talkcontribs) 17:51, 5 June 2016
